Topping D90 Balanced USB DAC Review

I've been using Apple computers since 1985, an owner of more than a dozen different Macs since 1994, an Apple Developer since 2000, a user of every MacOS that ever existed (even trialed NextOS before Jobs went back to Apple), and I've dealt with tens of thousands of cases of Mac connectivity...

Topping D90 Balanced USB DAC Review

Tried this before, but it is not a core audio issue. Instead, there is a deeper issue with Mac and USB peripherals that transcends type of device. There is basically some kind of fundamental flaw in Mac OS when it comes to USB device detection/connection that they never bothered to fix. I have...

    Dali speakers

This is a far more complex issue than power requirements for speakers. Dalis have variable sensitivity, but usually moderate to moderately high. Of course you want to make sure that your speakers are adequately power, however, I couldn't imagine working such a complex system without some kind of...

Speaker stands.. what is ASR's take on it.?

I recently made some rather sturdy pieces of hardwood furniture, and I have been checking out their resonances. For example, this bar stool and foot stool (Japanese elm). Striking either them yields audible resonance in the neighborhood of 1 kHz, in the female side of the vocal spectrum. It is a...

Speaker stands.. what is ASR's take on it.?

This is a no-go in earthquake country, Earth resonance would topple such a tall and narrow footprint stand.

Topping D90 Balanced USB DAC Review

I tried swapping to many different cables, and the same issue occurs. Also, the same kind of problem occurs with other USB devices, so it likely isn't the D90 either. Rather, the problem is with Apple and flawed detection of connected peripheral devices in general (HDMI connections tend to be...

Topping D90 Balanced USB DAC Review

My MacBook Pro recognizes my D90 (MQA version with AK chip) about 60-70% of the time...other times, I need to power off (back switch), disconnect/reconnect USB connection to the computer, and then re-start the D90. This always works for me, although it is somewhat of a hassle.

    Dali speakers

Oh yes, a new speaker cone design, and they also have a "Rubikore" as well...pretty sexy looking: Looks like these are indeed available in Tokyo (Dali is quite popular here, maybe the Menuet helped).

    Dali speakers

Wow, I never see them so cheap here in Japan. They are usually 3X that price. If I did find such a deal I would buy them (I am looking to upgrade my system in a second room, Rubicons would be ideal). If you could find a similar markdown on Epicons, even better!

Dali Zensor 1 Spinorama measurements (passive version)

I've owned a pair of these for over a decade, now they're in a side room system attached to a simple network Marantz integrated amp and they punch way way way above their weight class. I've also listened to much pricier Dali speakers and they all have a great sound that couples with typical...

Minidsp SHD Review Updated (DSP, DAC & Streamer)

I saw this newsletter in my email and welcome the new functionality. But honestly I don't encounter a lot of clipping in my experience, but this will clearly be different depending on what we're listening to, what kind of sources are used, etc.. When I've heard such artifacts I usually chalk it...

What are we listening to right now..

My wife discovered a wonderful playlist on Tidal called "Turkish Funk" which has opened a treasure trove of legitimately captivating 1970s funk, psychadelic, etc.. It transports the listener to a hazy huka lounge in Istanbul in the 1970s, probably a lot of mind-altering substances floating...

Topping DX7 Pro DAC and Headphone Amp Reviewed

Yeah I suppose, especially since prices have been going up. But again we have to think about sampling bias here, and scale it accordingly. We hear mostly reports of lemons, but these are on the tail of a wider distribution. If the worst lemons a company produces quit after 4-5 years, then I...

Topping DX7 Pro DAC and Headphone Amp Reviewed

Lemons exist in every brand, some more than others. They're still a great deal, even if kaput in 4-5 years.

Tidal MQA and 360 Reality formats are no more as of July 24, 2024

So the MQA saga ends...now just think about how much ink (electrons) was spilled over that!

Speaker stands.. what is ASR's take on it.?

Build them yourself...it will save a vast amount of money, and you'll get something close to what you want.

Speaker stands.. what is ASR's take on it.?

In science and engineering, vibrational resonances and attenuation are a very well-studied phenomena, much of which is possible using linear PDEs so the math is considerably simpler than in other fields. Any object subjected to vibration has a frequency response spectrum that betrays intrinsic...

Has anybody heard the new KEF KF92 sub? What are your opinions?

16.35 Hz is the C0 note at the very bottom of the scientific octave scale, one octave lower than the lowest C on a typical piano (C1)... ...C0 is one octave lower than the lowest C1 pedal note on Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor for organ (note the one octave decrement under the...
