Sorry, I initially misinterpreted your comment. Back in the day before stereo preamps had a passthrough to allow easy integration with an AVR, I used a DVM to set the volume pot to unity gain, cut a tiny triangle of vinyl tape and placed it on the front panel to mark the spot.

Wouldn't any user simply re-run the process originally used to balance mains vs subs after adjusting the volume pot on these amps, or am I missing something?

I wonder how many hobby audiophiles have source gear that can supply an AES/EBU signal. My guess is that it doesn't present a big opportunity for a firm that focuses on the consumer rather than pro side of the market.

I would assume that SMSL is not fully integrated and has parts made in lots by various suppliers, SMSL then assembles the final product, and if a model sells well and quickly, perhaps makes a second or third run.

I don't think it's unclear, in fact, it's crystal clear. You should use the USB-C connection because everything is resampled to 24 bit/48 kHz before it goes through DSP for the crossover and built-in corrections then on to amplification. An external DAC means nothing.
