    RCA to XLR trouble

3-pin XLR in the home sphere begs the question, why? There is no "perfect" single ended to "balanced" connection, it will be some kind of compromise. The impetus for XLR is hundreds of feet of signal wiring in a noisy environment, like 2mV microphone signals among 50/60Hz, HF, VHF, UHF...

Review and Measurements of SMSL VMV D1 DAC

"...I'm told amplifiers perform best when the pot is around 12 o'clock...." Poppycock, amplifiers have no sense of time.;) Why use low impedance headphones? Low impedance is only needed for high power. Add 600 Ohm resistors in series, or calculate an L-pad.

Review and Measurements of SMSL SU-8 DAC

Both units show 60Hz and 120Hz noise, plus higher order harmonics. Is it audible? The "power Supply Noise" graph has harmonics unrelated to 120Hz on the D50, (1 KHz apart) but the sub 500Hz range has some noise from rectifiers etc as you would expect. The D50 looks 30dB better than the other at...

Review and Measurements of SMSL VMV D1 DAC

Did the company say where the -100dB switching noise originated from? The 1mV p-p sine clearly show the switching noise. I'm thinking it may be from the power supply. Switching power supplies for digital circuits is no big deal, usually, but in very low noise analog circuits it is a different...
