“The Sensible Sound” magazine the ASR forum of pre-internet days?

That was the wrong link for the kit (although there was a link-through there)—correct one: https://www.humanspeakers.com/diy/1000.htm If these things weren’t so darn heavy, I’d really be tempted to build a pair. I’ve tested (and liked) my Duevel Omnis outside on the deck, only problem was...

“The Sensible Sound” magazine the ASR forum of pre-internet days?

I just came across this kit to build your own M1000: https://www.humanspeakers.com/e/epi1000.htm

    Omnidirectional speakers

I’ve never used a subwoofer with any of my Omnis, but don’t see why it would be any different than using with regular bookshelf speakers? All the speakers used here in the Omni comparisons (other than the BMRs) were floor standers with decent (or better) low end extension.

    Omnidirectional speakers

I ended up with the Omnis very close to my listening position (4’ equilateral triangle), increasing direct to reflected sound, taking more of the room out of the equation. That surprisingly didn’t reduce the soundstage size and speakers still completely disappeared.

    Omnidirectional speakers

What about behind the speakers, looking at their back while listening? I can see what you might be getting at with listening positions well off axis of the central position, but can’t see how any DI index could do what you describe once you get directly to the side (and moving further to...

Properties of speakers that creates a large and precise soundstage

Earlier today in the Omni thread, xschop posted a thought about trying Omnis near field on a desk, making me think of another “Omni like” portable speaker that is in this “enhancer” category. I use one currently as an external speaker for a kitchen TV due to its stereo “effect” and compact...

    Omnidirectional speakers

That’s an interesting thought, but see two challenges: 1. Getting them far enough away from the wall behind them (front wall) to reduce/delay early reflections 2. Finding a suitable desktop size omni speaker. There are not many desktop Omnis that I’m aware of—have these myself...

    Omnidirectional speakers

Had an “ah ha” moment tonight with the Omnis after trying a speaker placement previously untested. To set the table, I had been experimenting with BMR box speaker postioning in an attempt to optimize the soundstage, finally ending up with an 8’ equilateral triangle position, now 8’ from the...

Properties of speakers that creates a large and precise soundstage

The thread kinda shifted gears more to soundstage using a multichannel DSP scheme on 2 channel sources, so this seemed like the best point to go back to 2 speakers. After abandoning the surround sound rig experiments, I focused on dialing in the “box” speakers for best soundstage. First, I...

    Do you like AMT tweeters?

Not really all that much talk about AMT tweeters here, especially the dipolar “Great Heil” AMT. I’ve been playing my ESS AMT 1b extensively, primarily in some soundstage testing vs Omnis and unipoles, the AMTs being only dipole in the house for this purpose. I never really was all that...

Properties of speakers that creates a large and precise soundstage

I just tried this for soundstage comparison of 2 speaker stereo vs “9 channel stereo” DSP. This is opening a big can of worms, at least for me. On this recording, both sound really good and almost a coin toss on which I prefer after just a quick first listen.

    Omnidirectional speakers

I’ve had an “ah-ah” moment, at least provisionally, subject to much more testing. Some of the discussions here are paralleled on another thread covering a lot of the same territory. I just minutes ago did some quick tests, cycling through all the DSP modes that create a multichannel output...

Properties of speakers that creates a large and precise soundstage

Well, I cycled through all the DSP settings, a worthwhile experiment. I found all the hall/church/club settings had too much reverb, but the “9 channel stereo” setting was another story, a real eye opener. It eliminated the excessive reverb, actually sounding pretty darn good. The “9...

Properties of speakers that creates a large and precise soundstage

Has anyone else following along here tried the DSP multichannel creation of 2 channel stereo source discussed in recent posts? Well, I just did. Used a live Amsterdam hall recording since I have that particular hall DSP setting that was noted earlier as a top 3 acoustics venue. Waaaaay too...

    Omnidirectional speakers

This is impractical for many folks, those who don’t even have a multichannel system (assuming DSP multichannel creation from stereo sources is even preferable) and those, like me, whose systems are only 2 channel stereo outside the living room multichannel rig. That’s for darn sure. Maybe a...

Properties of speakers that creates a large and precise soundstage

Placing the LCR on the same arc would probably be best option (exactly what Dolby shows on their layouts) and likely what most folks do. Sometimes it’s not as easy to do in practice, so the distance setting corrects for the time delay difference. I just looked at the Dolby layout spec for my...

Properties of speakers that creates a large and precise soundstage

I’m only talking discrete multichannel surround sound—-This explains it better than I did: https://www.axiomaudio.com/blog/speaker-delay The reason you must set this correctly involves compensation for a peculiarity of human hearing--our tendency to locate a close-up sound before one that’s a...

Properties of speakers that creates a large and precise soundstage

I’m wondering if he was referring to the 4 stereo pair configuration in his post shortly before this one you replied to? The last sentence about only hearing it once with a stereo set confused me. Or am I just slow on the uptake? I’m more than curious about the comment on sounds right by his...

Properties of speakers that creates a large and precise soundstage

The few times I heard any of these “enhancers”they seemed to do more harm than good to the overall Sonics, and the variation in effect between recordings was significant as you said, sometimes not in a good way. I had a table radio some years back that had some type of soundstage enhancement...

Properties of speakers that creates a large and precise soundstage

So it was 8 speakers all aligned in the same plane in front of you? I’m not getting the one played in 3D part.
