    PEQ for Car?

Pretty cool little dongle thing. I have a 3.5mm input in the glove compartment already so this could work really well. I'll check it out, thanks. Now I suppose I'm obligated to develop a curve in REW while someone drives me around at highway speed!

    PEQ for Car?

I have a car with an atrocious audio system. A lot of the fault is not likely the audio system itself, but the car, which is a small mid engine two seater. Little room, few speakers, pretty high noise floor at speed. Anyway! I want to PEQ things. I listen only via Bluetooth (iPhone > Stock Head...

Truthear x Crinacle Zero:RED IEM Review

Sweet, thanks for the recommendation, I got a set of the Comply tips, should arrive in a few days and I'll try those out. If they're even just "as good" as the foam which comes with the RED, I'm happy, there's nothing wrong with the foams, I just couldn't get on board with the silicone ones.

Truthear x Crinacle Zero:RED IEM Review

Funny the discussion is on eartips now. If I had one complaint about these cheap miracles of modernity, and it's minor, it is that all the earpieces except the foam ones don't fit my ears. I don't think I have particularly strange ears, I'm usually just the "large" tip on most earphones, and...

Truthear x Crinacle Zero:RED IEM Review

Welp, just coming here to say I picked up a pair of these because why not for $55. They're technically perfect. What more can I ask? What an age.

    Topping EX5 Failure

Oh, and update: yeah, Topping got more money from me, and I replaced the EX5 with a D10 Balanced. It works great, was dirt cheap, and I guess I’ll pitch it in three years.

    Topping EX5 Failure

EX5 actually isn’t crazy tight inside. I didn’t see a ton of opportunity for airflow, they’re relying on the aluminum case as a heatsink, but I’ve for sure seen tighter cases, especially in DACs!

    Topping EX5 Failure

Oh, and another more positive note: I like the case design they used. Nice placement of screws, quite easy to get inside and / or reassemble the unit, and they bothered to use standoff washers and shields in the right places. Good ribbon cables of the right length and easily manipulated. It...

    Topping EX5 Failure

Yeah, absolutely this. A person who honestly does know what he's doing bothered to take it apart and trace what bits of the circuit are visible, and there was no sign of distress. Whatever went wrong was unrepairable by reasonable means, or at least unable to be diagnosed.

    Topping EX5 Failure

Having recently looked inside the EX5, the number one thing that would have made this easier to deal with would be serviceability. Everything is tiny, almost nothing is practically desolderable and replaceable. Sure, if it had been the power supply, or a plug, or maybe one of the larger...

    Topping EX5 Failure

I do want to be clear that I am on the fence about my feelings here. I got three years of service from the EX5, and it worked great. Also, I only got three years of service. Would I buy another Topping? They're pretty cheap! Yeah, I might. It's a pernicious thing though, and wasteful.

    Topping EX5 Failure

Well, it finally happened. After 3 years and 4 months of service, my Topping EX5 went black. I broke out the multimeter and checked the power supply as well as a few other critical paths in the circuit, but there's no apparent culprit. Manufacturer says it's out of warranty, and any shipping...

    Curiosity Teardown: Theta Casablanca

I really do regret not sending my old one to him before I sold it back in 2018ish. Maybe one day I’ll get up the guts to mail him one of my current loudspeakers.

    Curiosity Teardown: Theta Casablanca

Some fun direct wiring going on here. Overall, I have to say that I think the parts quality looks good. This looks like it cost a lot to make. I can’t speak for measurements or the circuits, but someone cared here. I really wish that I’d sent my previous working Theta to Amir.

    Curiosity Teardown: Theta Casablanca

Indeed. Time will tell with the Trinnov of the world, but I haven’t seen this kind of thing trickle down as much as it needs to. At the high end of the market, modularity is clearly achievable, and then it’s more a question of follow through- will it actually be used, or will a product have the...

    Curiosity Teardown: Theta Casablanca

There design of the braces and the RF shields is good. The case is quite rigid when they’re in place, everything is thicker gauge than you’d expect today, and fits together well.

The case is getting empty. So many different screws in use here!
