What is the Science behind putting loudspeakers on spikes?

I've read 1 before too. Hammer a 2mm nail 20mm into a timber floor and try to move it with your fingers, or just hammer it in 1mm and try to move it sideways. Does it seem coupled or decoupled? My speakers are on cones because they're tall and narrow and I needed outriggers for stability...

    WiiM Ultra

Hmm. That's a tough one. The expensive DAC might be doing some processing to make it "sound better", in which case it will not be "accurate". Otherwise, nobody would be able to hear any difference, but 95K buys a lot of wishful thinking!

Can anyone explain the vinyl renaissance?

I still have a turntable, because I like the look of it and I'm always amazed that music can come from a piece of plastic with grooves pressed into it - and nostalgia. But if what you say is true, then there was something very seriously wrong with your CD player.

Serious Question: How can DAC's have a SOUND SIGNATURE if they measure as transparent? Are that many confused?

It's true that our ears and our brains are different. With time and listening to too much loud music or noise our ability to hear certain frequencies declines and we might hear frequencies that aren't even there (tinnitus). So I don't know what you hear and you don't know what I hear. We might...

Master Thread: Are measurements Everything or Nothing?

Maybe measurements done in an anechoic chamber will not apply to your listening room, with its reflective surfaces, dimensions, listening position, speaker placement, speaker toe-in, and countless other variables. Speakers are electro mechanical devices that have different enclosures (shape...

Master Thread: Are measurements Everything or Nothing?

Hmm, not really. I would still expect them to be able to prove it in a properly controlled blind listening test, or admit that factors other than sound, eg. Appearance or expensiveness, come into it

Master Thread: Are measurements Everything or Nothing?

The audibility threshold is one thing. Another is the law of diminishing returns. Some claim to hear "massive and obvious differences" between very good electronic devices that measure to all intents and purposes, identically. When challenged to prove their assertions, they come up with a...

Master Thread: Are measurements Everything or Nothing?

Totally agree. A Ducati Panigale V4 measures well as a high performance motorcycle for the street or track. If it doesn't perform in those environments then it's down to the rider. However, it wouldn't outperform just about any dirt bike off road. For that you need a different set of...

Master Thread: Are measurements Everything or Nothing?

What is an example of something, other than in audio, that measures well but performs poorly, or vice versa? Especially the latter.

Inline passive attenuators, should I bother?

My pre-amp had a stupid amount of gain. The main problem was that it was loud at 9 o'clock and dangerously loud at 10 thru a 400wrms/ch@4ohms amp driving low sensitivity speakers. The volume control is not smooth so one step resulted in a big increase in SPL. I was just wondering what you meant...

Master Thread: Are measurements Everything or Nothing?

This thread is called "are measurements everything or nothing?", which is a false dichotomy (probably deliberate). Obviously measurements are important but it gets to a point when you can't hear the difference, like does it matter if distortion is -140dB or -120dB? These sorts of measurements...

Master Thread: Are measurements Everything or Nothing?

Recently I started looking for a new streamer/DAC combo, so I turned to Google, of course. One of the top hits was to a well know HiFi mag that’s been around for years. Here’s just a sample of the pros and cons of various streamers: “An infectious sense of rhythm” “Not the last word in fun”...

WiiM Pro Plus - Review & Measurements (Streamer)

I wondered the same thing. What would we be expected to hear - less distortion? I don’t really hear any obvious distortion with the Pro (not anything that adversely affects my enjoyment of music anyway) even tho the DAC doesn’t measure that well

    Wiim Pro issues

Thank you to everyone for their help. It was not a WiiM issue but my Amazon account was messed up. In case it is of any use to anyone in the future, the problem was that my default amazon store is amazon.com.au, but I was being directed to amazon.com to manage my devices. In my defence, I...

    I don't, which is why I didn't say I prefer a smartphone display over a TV.

    Wiim Pro issues

Lazy I guess. The Firestick is pretty good but I don't like having to use the tv as the display. Often my remote app can't find the device and I have to reboot it, which annoys me too

    Wiim Pro issues

Anyway thanks to those who have offered advice. I'm about ready to give up because I've wasted enough of my time and other people's, and the WiiM Home app isn't appalling - it's better than using a remote to control a Firestick! It just bugs the hell out of me that I can't find a solution and...

    Wiim Pro issues

Thanks for your reply. Alexa is already enabled on my WiiM Pro and I can tell Alexa to play music in the Amazon Music app, but the option to cast to the Wiim Pro is not there in the cast to devices list in the Amazon Music app. The WiiM is listed in "devices" in my Alexa app. I can cast to...
