Carver Raven 350 Review (Tube Amp)

I made this statement. Don't you think your comment is superfluous? But as whether it is a poor choice for 2 channels is a just opinion. I have been reading reviews here for several years, not sure why you think it is important to buy something cheap? Some people maybe want a nice looking...

Carver Raven 350 Review (Tube Amp)

I am saying that for a HT System, power consumption is something I would pay attention to. And the ultimate quality is not the primary goal, only that it can play loud. I would never consider buying class A or tube amplifiers for a 9 or 11 channel system. You would have to run several 20A...

Carver Raven 350 Review (Tube Amp)

Why is anyone really concerned about power consumption of specialized audio gear? What is the normal use case of a dedicated audio system? I don't know anyone that uses it naybe a few hours a day, unless you are retired. Back in the tube days, when every TV was tube based, I never heard people...

Swapping class AB amp linear supply with a SMPS - incl measurements

When I get a chance I will measure the 60 Hz hum and replace the decoupl;ing caps and remeasure. Usually I add another film capacitor across the big electrolytic. I refrained this time, because the wire from there to the amplifier board is quite long. And since I was rushed just to get it...

Swapping class AB amp linear supply with a SMPS - incl measurements

There are other sources to consider when seeing that hum is out of spec.. Attached is a schematic of one channel of this amp. It has the rails for the voltage gain stages isolated with additional capacitors. OP did not mention if he looked to see if these were open. I have seen many capacitors...

Swapping class AB amp linear supply with a SMPS - incl measurements

Yeah I agree with everything you said, but the Hypex power supply you mentioned does not have 2 additional voltage rails. I can get a 2kW supply from the other vendor also without the additional rails. Not going to pursue a mod like that. I think people who rejuvenate vintage equipment, will...

Swapping class AB amp linear supply with a SMPS - incl measurements

It may not be comparable but nonetheless if you change out the transformer, bridge and filter caps for an SMPS, I am not convinced that the amplifier will use less power. I am actually sure it won't because as you mentioned it is regulated meaning that under extreme loads where the original...

Swapping class AB amp linear supply with a SMPS - incl measurements

I am a bit late to this thread. I have the same amplifier and just recently replaced the two filter caps. Since I have not measured the output, I don't know how high the 60 Hz hum component is on output. But I do know that there is no hum in my speakers. I have ML Electromotion ESL hybrid that...

Class A vs AB vs D amplifiers

And why would you call them silly? I am sure you never heard them. Maybe you think champagne is silly, after all who wants to drink bubbly wine

Class A vs AB vs D amplifiers

How do you prevent that from happening in an inductive or capacitive load? In an fully inductive load the current lags by 90 degrees. So when the top transistor is supposed to turn off, it still has to conduct the inductive current for another quarter cycle.

Class A vs AB vs D amplifiers

What I gather from this conversation is that the people who have speaker that have controlled impedance where even badly designed amplifiers will work properly there maybe no difference. I think the people that hear a difference will have speakers on the edge of impedance norm. And maybe on top...

Class A vs AB vs D amplifiers

I did, I have a topping DAC and was able to detect some kind of change at around 0.2 to 0.3% I only did the 1kHz test because the distortion level on the phones was too high to determine any appreciable change at the lower tone. I assume we are a science based forum, so was just pointing out the...

Class A vs AB vs D amplifiers

Back on track for topic How many people are aware of the Spirito phenomena? I had read about BJT destroying themselves through secondary breakdown, but now it appears that Mosefets are not completely bulletproof. So the chance that the output stage of a class D amp will fry is not out of the...

Class A vs AB vs D amplifiers

I still have issues with tests like this. How do you do the math eliminating the distortion produced by your own equipment? To really get the right results, and not "how much added distortion can you hear added to your already distorting equipment". I did try the the video using my Topping DAC...

Class A vs AB vs D amplifiers

Still does not eliminate the distortion introduced by the codec. Plus the music he chose is just distorted noise, really bad test. There are music sections on the video game Nuke Dukem composed by Nine Inch Nails. I like the pieces, but no amount of added distortion is going to be noticeable...

Class A vs AB vs D amplifiers

Using the reactive resistance of the 3uH speaker cable, we can calculate what it is at 10kHz and 20kHz. We get 0.3 Ohms and 0.6 Ohms. Hardly negligible. Most Martin Logan ESL speakers have 2 Ohm impedance at 10kHz -20kHz range, some models are even lower. Doing the arithmetic to calculate...

@Doodski Not sure what to do with that video. I am at my desktop computer using creative lab speaker. Certainly not a reference. I also don't know what codec Youtube is using or how the guy encoded the audio on the video. I guess this video is a curiosity, a method for some people to get clicks...

Class A vs AB vs D amplifiers

I did another spectrum analysis on a second song. It looks completly normal. I can't explain the high frequency spectrum, so far no other song has it. The other thought was that a mic or mixer amp was clipping, but when taken any short samples you end up with the same spectrum. Interesting.

Class A vs AB vs D amplifiers

After looking at it closely, I noticed that the frequency scale was logarithmic, did not notice this before. So all the spurious distortions are the cumulative addition of all third order components. Even the Dynaco that has the worst looking distortions are still at the threshold of...

Class A vs AB vs D amplifiers

Going to try this now. It is 3 uH that way using AWG zip cord. My Kimber Kable measures 0.3uH, but it is a lot of wound wires. Zip cord is 300pF, Kimber Kable is 2.3nF. No wonder back in the days, it blew up unstable amplifiers
