This probably depends on the source. When not playing anything an optical or coax connection can either send all 0s or stop sending a signal entirely. I would guess in the all 0s case everything is fine, but if it stops sending a signal (and there's no clock) then something internally shuts off...

Personally I would get balanced to reduce chances of ground hum and because they always feel like stronger connections but other than that there isn’t a meaningful change of sound quality. Also I always buy my cables from blue jeans cable.

I think that should work. The output is to both XLR and RCA and I don't see a way to disable one of them. On the other hand though you might want to look at some of the products miniDSP sells which would allow you do do a digital crossover for your sub(s).

The DAC is smaller than the amp and the amp also has vent holes on the bottom so the DAC would end up completely blocking the vents on the bottom because the amps feet are past the edges of the DAC and there wouldn’t be any separation at all.
