does anyone listen to Taylor Swift? tell me what the draw is

Can't understand the Swift hype. It is not my music and I think that there is a lot of other music available which is at least as good. As far as I can see is that some people like to view up to a star. Same with people who admire royals which I too can't understand.

Newbie, back to HiFi after 40 years

Hi Chota, welcome to the show. At my audioset I use huge loudspeakers from T+A the T230 with very good bass response in my room. Tried different old shool power amps Yamah M-85, Crown D-150 and have now the Crown DC-300. To me there is no sound difference between the amplifiers. Maybe when bass...

Switching from Windows 10 machine to Mac – anyone here who did that recently?

Sure, that is also my impression from Mac users. They are often not technically oriented and want just a system to work with. With Windows I have much more options to create a PC for my needs because of lots of hardware and processors available. And as mentioned cost is in a fair relation.

Switching from Windows 10 machine to Mac – anyone here who did that recently?

Good way to become angry. My wife has a iPad, myself I am walking from DOS to Windows. In Windows I mainly know what happens and I can find solutions. Further, a lot of measuring and other software is available for Windows which is not so easy to get for the Mac. Sadly Apple is a closed system...

Are people getting sick of streaming services...

For music I really enjoy for me local stored files are mandtory, either CD or downloaded. Reason is that I will be sure to have it and am not dependent on a streaming service which may exist or not exist in the future. Different is when I want to detect new music for me. Then I use amazon-music...

60V/20A bench supply for $130? Bought and measured!

Well built power supply. Since it is a switched mode one did you measure the dip voltage and recovery time after an instanenious current demand like a amplier module would need when a big bass pulse occurs?

    Silver Soldering Teach Me

Don't eat, don't drink and you will stay healthy until starvation death. LOL. Of course it makes sense to prevent people without knowledge from all kind of hazards. But I feel some use this for a kind of believer war against others. In Germany many types of chemicals are not allowed to be sold...

    Calling all golden ears

    1. Size of the room estimation I could roughly but depends on acoustical damping. If completely damped so no reflection and thus no reverbation which would give no clue. 2. Price depends on what amount of equipment is in the stereo setup included. Electronics can hardly be judged if modern ones...

Can there be some form of multitone test for headphones/IEM's?

Short search shows measurement of microphones here: https://josephcrowe.com/blogs/news/microphone-distortion-comparison

Can there be some form of multitone test for headphones/IEM's?

Interesting question. In genereral it should be possible to use multitone for evaluation. There is little data on measurement microphone distortion. So it is probably hard to distinguish between headphone and microphone distortion. Would be great if anybody here could contribute with experience...

    Silver Soldering Teach Me

Much is right in the above writings. To make it clear, I do not recommend to use lead/tin solder, it was just my personal experience. Of course the work place must be cleared from fume with a ventilation to the outside. And general rule was and still is that handling with lead needs hand washing...

    Silver Soldering Teach Me

Europe does also not allow lead/tin solder for products. Myself grew up with lead/tin and I have enough NOS for rest of my life. Silver solder did I use upon the wish of a friend who wanted this in a DIY phono MM preamp which I built for him. I don't use silver solder or lead free solder. With...

youtube, live music with good audio quality

YouTube audio quality is wide spread depending on the recording process from smartphone to mixer take. But what is the audio quality worth for me on the above videos when I don't like the music and the artist? Therefore I have to take the audio quality as it is when I like the music.

    Silver Soldering Teach Me

My experience with silver solder (and lead free one) is that it does not flow so nice as the old good lead/tin one which I still use. You should try different solder tip temperatures for a good connection.

A New Tube Preamp/Headphone Amp from Douk Audio Needs Your Advice!

Using just one triode system as a preamp is questionable. Distortion will be built in if not used as a buffer with no gain. Better to use a solid triode/pentode combination circuit with some feedback to get low distortion and low output impedance. And, the ECF801 is a tube for high frequency...

Bruno Putzeys ‘Life on the edge’

    2) If dynamic compression was done after a mix or in mic channels during the take then distortions may created. If the original music itself had not much dynamic then I think no additional distortion is created?

Bruno Putzeys ‘Life on the edge’

My STAX electrostats may enhance upper frequencies which in turn will emit probably more of the distortions of a poor recording. But this just shows the poor recording better recognizable but still is a poor thing. If a strictly linear tuned system does not show that much of the distortions...

Bruno Putzeys ‘Life on the edge’

Yes indeed. Listen your records with a electrostatic headphone then you hear instantly which are bad records. Doing it on my system via loudspeakers the differences are also readable but maybe not so much.
