    Small bookshelf speakers in cabinet

This isn’t criticism at all. This setup’s biggest opportunities aren’t different speakers or different gear. They are not the limiting factor. Attention to the setup/room/furniture is what can provide an actual, significant improvement. The components of this system are good. With some upgrades...

    Small bookshelf speakers in cabinet

Better equipment will not help this system. If spending money, spend it on furniture that can accommodate speakers in a better location. It's pointless buying better speakers when they are sitting on the floor. Furniture and room treatment are where you'll actually see a benefit from making changes.

    Hypex NCx500 VTV vs Buckeye

Those custom buffers measure worse than not using one. The whole point of hypex is clean, accurate sound so those buffers are snake oil in my opinion. I opted for buckeye with the stock input gain since it matches my line level voltage and provides the best measurements. Though the buckeye...

idle power consumption class–a vs class–d

The idle consumption from the power supply on a class D amp is a significant factor. The amp circuitry is efficient but the power supply is average. That means that at low volume the overall power draw of class D is just ok. Where they excel is at higher volume. The efficiency of amplification...

Is it worth getting a better subwoofer?

With an open floor plan and that sub, the room isn't being pressurized so you won't feel bass punch. But at your listening level, that may not matter. Also, you'd have to significantly go up in size and power to pressurize an open floor plan. If you're already happy with the volume, I'd get a...

Beginner seeking advice on DSP+Room treatment for Living Room + Studio

Appologies for the green light and ugly couch? I didn't even notice. I was too busy hyperventilating over the dented dust cap. You're on the right track! With those subs, the windows are going to be moving in and out no matter what. The easiest option is a small wood shim that is removable when...

Why don't more AVRs include asynchronous usb input

Yep. Though this is the equivalent of a car enthusiast retrofitting a big block engine into their favorite muscle car. Certainly it's done. But mass market manufacturers aren't going to design products around it. Hopefully that doesn't come across as dismissive. I too have niche needs that I...

Why don't more AVRs include asynchronous usb input

With the ubiquity of streaming functionality built into TVs and streaming boxes, the demand for a direct computer connection is effectively zero compared to the mass market. TVs and streaming boxes are fully capable computers at this point. The software functionality that gets implemented for...

    Gear evoking emotion

With those peaks and nulls, improved / different gear is likely not likely to a productive quest. You're right, focusing on room treatment and possibly another sub would be the most productive thing to do. As for why it sounded better, my money is on a volume difference, a different master or...

What will the impact of prospective -- and possibly impending -- U.S. tariffs be on audio gear?

I want to commend everyone for an amazingly level-headed discussion. As a Pennsylvanian, I've been bombarded with the most aggressive political canvasing in human history for the past few months. It's great to read analysis and discussion rather than political attacks! Economic impact is the...

Power cable, speaker cable and RCA together?

Agreed. You may not need a shielded power cable. It's worth trying if later changes aren't too problematic. Shielded XLR might be enough. Twisted speaker wire could also help. I have about 2.5 meters of many of analog, power and speaker cables running together in parallel and had to take no...

    KEF Q Meta is Coming

Good imaging for the primary listening position centered on the screen. Anyone else in the room would benefit greatly from a center channel putting dialog in the correct location.

Beginner seeking advice on DSP+Room treatment for Living Room + Studio

Your equipment is already good enough that the room is the limiting factor. This is true quite frequently. It’s more tempting to buy a new piece of gear with better specs. But really, it’s the typical echo chamber living room that dictates sound quality beyond what you have. The most expensive...

    Calibration Microphone

I’d go with poorly reasoned rather than wrong. The video comes across as broad criticism of usb calibration mics. With more self awareness, I think the point would have been much more narrowly focused. He’s analyzing specialized and relatively rare usage scenarios as if they were the norm...

Dirac has a new CEO, new (DLBC) pricing, and some other Dirac rumors

I was questioning this as well. Is there any evidence of that? It is not unusual for a CEO to seek new opportunities. They tend to be very driven people. The departure could easily be on good or bad terms. Without evidence of either, my preference is to avoid stoking rumors of conflict.

    Calibration Microphone

Good call, start with the simplicity of the USB mic. It will be a long time before the UMIK is your limiting factor, if ever. Knowledge and calibration experience are far more important than fidelity beyond this mic. My take is that the hassle of calibration causes most people to avoid...

    Denon AVR-X3800H Review

I for one am in favor of manufacturers allocating their BOM budget on things with a perceivable improvement. Since I can't tell a difference, it's better for me that Denon spends their time and money elsewhere. Their products currently provide the best tradeoffs for my needs.

Hypex NC252MP or NC502MP as external amps for Denon X4800H in a small room?

In a small room with those speakers, the 252 is more than enough. I have a mix of 252 and 502 and wish i'd got all 252 for surrounds and heights. In my open-plan house, more headroom was debatable for the LCR channels. But otherwise, the 252 is preferable. It has identical sound but consumes...

Monoprice stands for Kef Reference 1 Meta

It isn't hard to drill holes to match the hole layout of the Kef. With such a nice speaker, it's probably worth drilling 8 holes to avoid being knocked over. The holes won't hurt the stand and you'll never be able to see them even if repurposed for other speakers in the future.

    How old are ASR's users?

Fascinating! I too would be curious to see how the demographics differ at other AV forums.
