    What's with all the * * * * * * ?

Nice turntables. Attached picture is an absolute requirement.

Let's not forget the Burwen 1201A for reduction of steady-state record noise and the KLH TNE-7000 to address the clicks and pops. The noise level of most records bothered me so much that I ran both in my system back when records were the highest fidelity available to most consumers.

Nice turntables. Attached picture is an absolute requirement.

There's a difference between theoretical capability and music requirements. I attended a live jazz festival last week. For one song during performances by various artists, I recorded a minimum unweighted SPL of 86.5 at my seat. The maximum was 119.9. (And, yes, I was wearing earplugs to protect...

No. Nowadays, I use an HP49G for quick calculations, but I like to keep the slide rules around as a novelty and the occasional walk down Memory Lane to a time when I did need and use a slide rule. Same for my turntable. :)

Actually, all commercially available releases, regardless of format - tape, vinyl, CD, high-res - have had their content dynamically compressed in the studio. The maximum theoretical dynamic range for vinyl is roughly 70 dB, whereas for digital, it's 96 16-bit, and 144 for 24-bit, so I doubt...

Nice turntables. Attached picture is an absolute requirement.

As I recall, there were data-backed claims in the 60's/70's to the effect that tonearms with removable headshells were less suitable with certain cartridges, i.e. those that were very low mass with highly compliant cantilever suspensions. The SME 3009 was available with either a fixed or a...

will CDs eventually become obsolete due to no CD transports surviving?

Yep. I still have plenty purchased in the early 80's that all still play just fine.

Master "deals" (massdrop, ebay, Amazon, etc.) Thread on Audio Product Sales

SVS has the SB16 Ultra on sale right now for $1699 ($600 off the regular price) and PB16 Ultra for $2199 ($700 off). Killer drivers, onboard parametric eq, remote control + excellent phone app. Either is a lot of sub for the money.

Has DSP turned us into audio neurotics? [rant]

Interesting. For your consideration, I asked a musician friend (primarily alto sax and keyboards) this morning what was most important to him in conveying his musical intent. His response was, "phrasing." I know him very well, so I was quite certain that his answer would have nothing to do with...

Has DSP turned us into audio neurotics? [rant]

It seems to me that there are a lot of people here who feel free to redefine standard terms to suit themselves. :)

Has DSP turned us into audio neurotics? [rant]

That is correct. They are NOT musicians by my - and Webster's - definition. At their best, they are engineers; at their worst, butchers. You are certainly welcome to define them any way you like.

Has DSP turned us into audio neurotics? [rant]

Allow me to clarify. My personal definition of a musician is the same as Webster's, i.e. THIS.

Has DSP turned us into audio neurotics? [rant]

Perhaps a little caution should be applied when tossing about terms such as "the artist's intent." There appears to be quite a bit of implied scope creep. Let's also clearly define the "artist." In my mind, the only artists are the musicians. Everyone else involved at the production end is a...

    Snake Oil Department, Top This

Typo, now corrected. Sorry. Correct section is 210.6, and that is a direct quote. Edit: Note that "nominal" in that quote is +/- 5%, so a range of 114 - 126 is acceptable, but 120 is the target.

Has DSP turned us into audio neurotics? [rant]

Plodding through all four pages of this thread to date, I've discovered, unsurprisingly, that responses run the full gamut, from unceremonious rejection of DSP to full embrace. Nothing like a solid consensus. The high point of this misadventure, for me, was seeing the old A-77 in...
