Apple AirPods Max Review (Noise Cancelling Headphone)

There is no dispute that the natural ear canal resonances for an open ear shift when the ear is occluded with an IEM depending on the insertion depth, etc. The past year we've spent some time modeling earphones in different ear canals (based on MRI scans) in COMSOL and compared the results...

Apple AirPods Max Review (Noise Cancelling Headphone)

As I said the adjustment was made using the B&K 5128 DF response as a baseline so it’s relatively smooth at HF. I cannot say if the lack of energy in the lower treble in AAP Max is related to HF response. You can check out their scientific publications or ask the person in charge of headphone...

Apple AirPods Max Review (Noise Cancelling Headphone)

No, but Gaetan Lorho looked into that for the over-ear headphone and found the gain was the dominant perceptual factor not the frequency of the resonance. https://aes2.org/publications/elibrary-page/?id=14966

Apple AirPods Max Review (Noise Cancelling Headphone)

I hope to publish an AES paper on these experiments in the next few months.. when I add more listeners. But essentially it involves using a method of adjustment where the DF target is adjusted in 3-bands

Apple AirPods Max Review (Noise Cancelling Headphone)

Ω I was referring to the tuning of the headphone based on a measurement on a standard test fixture like GRAS45CA or B&K5128 -- the HPTF. Not as a result of some dynamic active sensor that adjusts for the listener's ear canal acoustics

Apple AirPods Max Review (Noise Cancelling Headphone)

I might have agreed with you until I did this experiment where listeners were given a knob to adjust a filter centered at 3kHz (Q = 2) and could adjust it in 0.25 dB increments over a range of +6 to -10 dB. This was an IE headphone tuned to the B&K 5128 DF response after they made adjustments...

    AKG K60 Vintage Headphone Review

This is the measurement of the headphone in the AES paper in 1967 showing the headphone measured on a human using the probe mic in the cup., and the same headphone measured in the 6 cc coupler which they say is accurate only up to 600 Hz. Not sure how you translated that measurement to what...

Apple AirPods Max Review (Noise Cancelling Headphone)

I was told by someone who left Apple that they tamed the so-called "ear gain" centered at 3 kHz to accommodate different ear canal geometries that produce different amounts of gain.. The AirPods Pro 2 also have reduced gain through there. The SoundGuys target curve does as well although their...

    AKG K60 Vintage Headphone Review

The science behind it is strongly featured in the advertising as "humanized" listening where they measured the headphone placed on humans using a probe mic inserted in the cup. But apparently they didn't bother to carefully ask the humans how it sounded?

    Revel F206 Tower Speaker Review

It’s been awhile since I have done an A-B comparison but talking to Revel staff last night at AXPONA I’m told the 226be are a significant audible improvement. Maybe Im trying to convince myself not to spend the extra money ( a bias). If I change my mind I will have A pair of F206 and center...

    Revel F206 Tower Speaker Review

My main left /right speakers in my 7.4.4 setup. I’ve thought of replacing them with 226be but they are so good it’s hard to justify.

Help me create a personalized EQ tool

We have implemented something called Personifi in a JBL headphone app that applies EQ based on a hearing test and user input related to age, gender and listening experience. I talked about this in a couple of slides at my CanJam NYC 2024 talk.

Help me create a personalized EQ tool

Where did you ever hear that? Certainly not in the USA. There are thousands of patents that exist without products that implement them.

Help me create a personalized EQ tool

We filed a patent on this idea a few years ago. There are different approaches but this is one. https://patents.google.com/patent/US20230403511A1/en?

Was anybody at the Sean Olive talk at CanJam?

I'm saying 3db above flat for binaural. Harman Target is 6.4 dB bass shelf and the IE target is 10 dB on a type 3.3 ear simulator

See my comment about lack of tactile information in binaural reproduction. It can account for up to 3 db of bass that isn’t perceived in the binaural versus the in situ experience. We published some AES papers on this a few years ago based on experiments in a car.

Was anybody at the Sean Olive talk at CanJam?

Yes, if the ear canal resonance is in the recording you need to take it out of the headphone on playback. Make the headphone flat. If you make blocked ear recordings then you need to include the ear canal during playback: The trick is how to identify the contribution of the ear canal and the...

Was anybody at the Sean Olive talk at CanJam?

Here is the difference between the BK5128 DF and the average response of 19 loudspeakers equalized to be flat measured with the BK 5128. They are almost identical. So I think it is valid to use it as a starting point to make bass and treble adjustments. The shape of the curve is not so...

Was anybody at the Sean Olive talk at CanJam?

Just to be clear. The BK5128 DF curve unmodified was the least preferred headphone target curve tested. This confirms previous listening tests where the DF wasincluded. It is too bright and thin, yet it remains the current standard and recommended target quoted in AES and IEC standards for the...

New in 2024: AKG N9 Hybrid

They are supposed to be tuned HARMAN AE 2018 Target. I have not measured a sample yet. I heard a DV2 sample in December when I visited our labs in Shenzhen, China. They appeared to be balanced, comfortable and had decent ANC performance. I compared them to Sony , Apple and Bose ANC headphones...
