The pain of being a member of ASR

I agree. I think that dividing us in these camps represents a category error. (See my reply above a few moments ago.) But some people pursue this categorization of people into these opposing camps and seem happy with it over the long term despite all arguments, pleas and evidence. So it seems...

The pain of being a member of ASR

That made me laugh out loud. Wonderful. And I would of course retort that yes, if you ever claimed to be an objectivist, you must be faking something because in the end we are all subjectivists. All we can expect from science is use the objectivity it can afford to inform us. In this I am much...

The pain of being a member of ASR

Correct. I've made essentially the same point here myself more than once. Afaict, I believe I agree in on your arguments but I'm still not prepared to get upset about any of this. The fact that these arguments are going on at all, at the level that people talk about losing friends over them, is...

The pain of being a member of ASR

I tend to agree. Some argue that there's a difference between something that is overtly just an expensive show-off item, e.g. jewellery, and audiophile USB cables, which involve a deliberate deception. That's an interesting point but, if we leave aside the question of deceptive marketing (which...

The pain of being a member of ASR

Sure, if you prefer. There are way more worrying morally questionable beliefs, dispositions and history of behavior that I allow in friends. I think this goes to the definition of friendship. If there isn't enough loyalty there to get me past a silly USB cable, what is really the nature of the...

The pain of being a member of ASR

Sadly? I can think of reasons to not want someone as a friend, e.g. the person is a blowhard, or an a-hole, or a bigot, or a bore. But over what kind of USB cable they enjoy? Really? That's like choosing friends based on what side they part their hair. Not that anyone has a side parting these...

OK, what are you guys buying yourselves for Christmas?

That's top priority for me. But the big factors also include play-ability, quality of construction, finish and adjustment, visual appearance. Sound quality is a very complex subtle thing because good acoustic guitars respond to small variations in how you play them. This makes the instrument...

OK, what are you guys buying yourselves for Christmas?

Not, wow those are nice? You aren't the person I'd have expected to go straight to pricing. They are top tier production instruments with exceptional performance. And if your triodes are allowed to have an animist spirit in them then so are my acoustics.

OK, what are you guys buying yourselves for Christmas?

I don't think I'm buying myself something for xmas but I'm considering making a trip to The Music Zoo to trade my Yamaha FG9 for an LS36.

What are we listening to right now..

The NID Tapes: Electronic Music from India 1969-1972 Find it in your streaming app or here's a youtube playlist of the album. And an article with some background info on India's Moog https://www.musicradar.com/news/lost-moog-nid-tapes

The Loudness Wars has invaded the streaming services.

Iiuc it is a per-track gain adjustment so that each track ends up with the same loudness when played. So if the tracks on your album as you mastered it had varying loudness, these differences will be neutralized by the app's loudness normalization.

The Loudness Wars has invaded the streaming services.

No. But the fact that it's on by default neutralizes certain aesthetic options that have in other media been quite valuable.

The Loudness Wars has invaded the streaming services.

Yes, I think so. Given the incredible internal dynamic range in DAWs and that you can now even export to 32-bit floating point, you kinda wonder why bother with careful tracking, gain staging and mixing when the product of your careful work is going to get pushed through all these layers of...

High resolution you can use. 108 Gigapixel scan of a Vermeer

They should scan the empty frame. It seems like you can find amazing stuff no matter what you point that thing at.

The Loudness Wars has invaded the streaming services.

The Amazon Music app has a loudness normalization switch that's on by default. I suppose that's another dynamic effect that's part of the picture here. Or do you think each track has a pre-computed loudness value and the loudness normalization adjusts each track based on that?

    ROLLS HV6 Headphone Volume Control

Yes, a proper studio wouldn't need this. I used the word "hack" and properly set up studios don't need hacks. Like Amir said in the review, get a proper volume control upstream.

Embracing Simplicity in Audio: Anyone Else Skipping Room Correction, Measurement Microphones, and the Like?

Victor gramophone and Nipper, Bose Bluetooth speaker and Zeno, ... It's all perfectly logical. Put in an omni and see how it goes. Seems a shame to waste the coax. Can always upgrade it if it seems like a station you want to hear could benefit from it.

Embracing Simplicity in Audio: Anyone Else Skipping Room Correction, Measurement Microphones, and the Like?

That can get complicated too. I had a yagi on a rotator on the roof for years. My grandparents had a Bush TR82 on top of the fridge. That was relatively simple with only MW and LW bands. They listened to The Archers on it. We had to be perfectly quiet while that was on or leave the kitchen.
