DPreview to be shuttered. [ not anymore]

Yes, there was a time where the forums there were pretty toxic and I stayed away for a while. I started visiting a couple years ago though, and found it MUCH better - far less 'brand superiority' fights, and even the 'sensor size' fights were largely muted. I'm not sure whether this was due to...

Coming soon: MiniDSP Flex with HDMI input

I'll guess that it'll be well above $800. I'm guessing at least $1100 plus at least $300 extra for multi-channel DIRAC, but with the Flex-8 only being $599 maybe I'm being too pessimistic (since there are no codec licensing concerns since it's LPCM only). If it is $800 for the base unit, it may...

Coming soon: MiniDSP Flex with HDMI input

This is an interesting offering and I'm curious as to what the price will be. I suspect it'll creep up into HT receiver levels which will make it a tougher sell. Still, getting closer to what so many have been clamoring for - a way to run a hybrid audio/video system while getting away from HT...

DPreview to be shuttered. [ not anymore]

I have tried to resist the youtube influence, but it's becoming impossible. So much content only lives there now. And, a large part of what brought me back to more serious engagement with photography is getting started in birds (and other wildlife I suppose), and it seems that youtube is the...

DPreview to be shuttered. [ not anymore]

Yes, this is simply untrue. The high-end mirrorless offerings from all brands are all significant steps up from any DSLR, with the possible exception of AF behavior in very low light. (well, and battery life) Far better autofocus, far better burst capabilities, and while expensive the premium...

    Most cringeworthy Movie Cliche.

Apparently Gravity's Rainbow just turned 50 (as did Dark Side of the Moon, oddly) not a bad article https://www.esquire.com/entertainment/books/a43095495/gravitys-rainbow-anniversary/ And yeah - I'm not sure GR has 'a plot' in the conventional sense, or at least 'the point' isn't one that is...

KEF LS50 Meta vs KEF R3

I'm not sure I'll do a direct comparison, but I moved my R3's over to my desk and have LS50 Meta's arriving tomorrow which will take up residence on top of the Rhythmik FM8's in the TV setup. The R3's have enough extension that I don't have to complicate the desktop setup with a sub, and the...

New Product: Arvus H2-4D Atmos Renderer, Simultaneous 16 channel AES/Balanced Analog/Dante Output

Yes, this is the 'obvious' low-ish way to handle this. Does make me wonder how clock sync/clock skew would be handled. Maybe I need to do some reading.

New Product: Arvus H2-4D Atmos Renderer, Simultaneous 16 channel AES/Balanced Analog/Dante Output

Oh, now THAT is interesting. Obviously still a bit niche requiring Dante/AES67, but it makes it a potentially viable alternative to a mass-market receiver or pre-pro. I'm not sure I'm actually in the market for something like this, but it will make me pay closer attention to see how it develops.

    Idaho Murders

Yeah, maybe it's a failure of my imagination, but I struggle to envision a way that leaving your DNA at the scene of a murder will prove to be a key element in a defense argument that exonerates him. Compared to, say, NOT leaving your DNA at a crime scene, it doesn't seem very smart.

First Watt J2 for Bi-Amping Revel or Dali Speakers?

It's not about Class D, it's just about striving for accuracy. The Class A/AB Benchmark AHB is still one of the very best measuring amps Amir has ever tested, and other A/AB designs like the Neurochrome amps have scored very well too. You're simply incorrect about tube amps and the Pass/First...

First Watt J2 for Bi-Amping Revel or Dali Speakers?

Yes, this is really a question for a different forum. Nobody here is going to suggest using a 300B or First Watt amp in any circumstances where you care about measured performance. If you want to use one of those amps for some reason, it's going to be for non-audio reasons. Which is OK if...

any recommendation for a good replacement to the sabaja30a?

My perusal of the 'all in one' market leads me to believe that the best value is in separates. Something like a Sabaj A10d that has variable output over XLR (or similar - there are less expensive similar options, but I have the Sabaj) and a Hypex NcoreMP 252 from a vendor like VTV or Buckeye...

DAC under 1500USD with top performance volume control

No, 24 vs 32 bit is irrelevant for volume control. Even 24 bit gives us a theoretical capacity of 144dB or 20+ dB of headroom compared to the actual performance of the best measuring DACs. Those bottom 3 bits will be buried in the noise. 32 bit resolution IS important for internal calculations...

Minidsp SHD Review Updated (DSP, DAC & Streamer)

Similar enough to my use-case. I'd be looking to 'switch' the mains rather than the subs, but similar-ish. I think the biggest 'problem' I have in designing my solution is that I'm currently running my mains via spdif out (since I had a spare DAC and it makes balancing levels easier), and was...

Minidsp SHD Review Updated (DSP, DAC & Streamer)

Thanks. I hadn't seen any indication to the contrary, but figured it was worth asking. My OLED screen is pretty shot already (since dimming/auto-off wasn't present in the initial firmware), so I guess we'll see how bad it is.

Minidsp SHD Review Updated (DSP, DAC & Streamer)

Interesting that they didn't notify of the changes. Seems like it would be easy-ish to spin an 'upgrade' to ESS DACs. Since this was bumped, I actually have a couple SHD questions: - I have an original SHD purchased shortly after this review. I've never upgraded any software/firmware since it...

DAC under 1500USD with top performance volume control

This is something that Amir doesn't test explicitly, but I'd hazard a guess that "most" DACs that have volume control implement it within the DAC chip itself rather than with external variable-gain circuitry or (horrors!!) a potentiometer. IF a DAC does do volume control in the digital domain...

    New Dayton Audio Orion Kit

Yeah, I don't think there is any legal problem with them using the name. It's just the the Orion project by SL was a very significant and very well known project in the DIY community. So, it's rather tacky to try to re-use the name for another design. And I think PE is generally a good company...

    New Dayton Audio Orion Kit

    So, uh, you're suggesting it's a piss-poor kit? :)
