Master Thread: Are measurements Everything or Nothing?

the DACs are tangible, they create sound waves , and your ear shape/hair pickup the dancing air molecules

Of course the car analogy works, everything is fun versus metrics. When you dance, do you want to have fun or making the correct steps down to the inches?

our hearing doesn’t have to hear beyond human comprehension like a dog to know which sounds better. example: i cannot carry a note singing. at the same singing volume, whitney houston sounds a million times better than me.

You don't seem to understand that the best metrics may not be the most fun. Example: I have a bought new bold red 2017 Corvette with the upgraded 4 big center mounted louder exhausts and stickshift. I could have bought a Tesla that I test drove which by metrics is quieter and even more...

Correct, i2S is not a need, it's a want. ;-) We don't need any of this hifi equipment, we really only need music via AM radio.

hi. For wireless I don’t want to build a pi, and Jay’s Iyagi said it doesn’t sound as good. For wired hires lossless, i currently use my iphone12proMax with the apple lightning-to-usbCamera adapter but it will eventually have dropouts due to the wire being bent due to usage. but at $15 used...

If I were to get a streamer, which ones work with Apple Music via Airplay2 and has a USB output? The ifi zen streamer is the cheapest device I can find that has both Apple Music via Airplay2 and has a USB output.

That's incorrect about the maximum sample rate speed of 48 kHz. Wikipedia says that for digital audio via HDMI can go up to 192 kHz: So maybe a future AppleTV4k will give us hires lossless music (AppleTV4k currently can only play normal lossless). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI

My system is really a home theater (7.2.4 setup with 150in screen) with the equipments located a foot behind my couch in a 6' bookcase with the projector on top, and I'm really listening/paying attention to the music's sound quality and not walking around the room so I don't mind being tethered...

Au contraire mon frère, I think that the iPhone 12 Pro Max with its 6.7in screen, high resolution screen is better than standalone streamers with their remotes that generally don't even have a display. The iphone's big screen shows me the song lyrics that I can karaoke to. The Apple Music app...

Home theater receiver options...everything seems to have compromises this year...thoughts? recommendations?

Since 2000, I've had several brands and there are some that I would/would not buy again. RECEIVERS: 1. Onkyo: NO. They ran hot and killed the HDMI output. Center channel volume was low and not clear. 2. Denon: Own a 1912, S760H, X3700H. Good for the price, reliable and has the features but...

Denafrips ARES II USB R2R DAC Review

No, AppleTV4k only supports normal lossless, not hires lossless. The advantage of using my iPhone instead of AppleTV4k is the TV/projector doesn't need to be on which heats up the room even more than just my amplifier. I only use the AppleTV4k for Apple Spatial Audio (Dolby Atmos surround...

Measurements only capture parts of the music. There are attributes within the music below 20Khz that contribute to good sound between one DAC and another (e.g., realism, 3D, details, tight bass, tonality, attack/power, fullness/thinness, decay). Just because one Dac can go higher Gigahertz...

yes. The E70 sounds better even though the treble does not go as high as the E50. The E70 sounds more natural, smooth and the vocalists' vibratos are better.

Denafrips ARES II USB R2R DAC Review

I love the Denafrips Ares II 12th with my Arcam AVR5 receiver, sounds the most realistic ever so far like a live performance. omg, the singers and band sound like they are in the room. (I've listened to $90k, $200k, and $1m 2-channels systems with Wilson Audio speakers and either Burmester or...

What DAC should I buy? (R2R or Delta)

I was in San Antonio and Austin this past weekend and I enjoyed the live music there. So yesterday I ordered the Denafrips Ares II 12th anniversary (more power, better firmware, and i2s input) which reviewers say sounds even more realistic than the original Denafrips Ares II. I'm looking...
