    M-Audio BX4 D3 | Active Monitor | Measurements, Teardown & Subjective Impressions

You have not mentioned any budgetary constraints but if you are looking for something at a price point similar to that of the BX4, then I would recommend the Edifier MR-4. It is very well behaved for the price.

Suggestions for DSP options - which components?

For a low cost solution with few disadvantages beyond complexity of configuration, I would recommend a Tinysine TSA1701 or a HiFiBerry DAC+ DSP. Both are based upon the ADAU1701 but the latter offers onboard SPDIF I/O.

Mackie MR524 | Studio Monitor | Measurements & Subjective Impressions

If you are interested in purchasing a measurement microphone, then I would recommend a UMIK-1. Regardless of the microphone selected however, the four PEQ filters available on your interface are insufficient to implement a proper correction. You need at least 8-10 filters.

Mackie MR524 | Studio Monitor | Measurements & Subjective Impressions

The 524 is a simple active crossover and a pair of class AB amplifiers. Specifically, TDA7294s.

Mackie MR524 | Studio Monitor | Measurements & Subjective Impressions

Correct. Strong modes will be audible as significant peaks or dips in volume as you sweep the band. Unless you have a great deal of headroom available or specific knowledge of the desired listening SPLs, only peaks should be corrected in this manner.

Mackie MR524 | Studio Monitor | Measurements & Subjective Impressions

Likewise a slightly late response but the LSR 305 and 305P are in fact DSP monitors and make use of the STA350BW for this purpose. System latency is 0.65ms.

Mackie MR524 | Studio Monitor | Measurements & Subjective Impressions

I'm afraid four PEQ filters per channel will be insufficient. In that case, you would need to make use of PEQ under Windows.

Mackie MR524 | Studio Monitor | Measurements & Subjective Impressions

If your audio interface includes onboard PEQ, then you could absolutely apply the filters in that manner. The filters above are anechoic and do not account for room response. My suggestion would be to disable the corner setting (far too broad) and ignore the first filter in the list. If you...

5.1 Home theatre on apple dongles for that sweet sweet audiophile gore

It is not a connection issue but rather a consequence of the HDMI protocol, which interleaves the audio and video. When the output resolution or refresh rate is switched by the source device, audio output is necessarily interrupted during the process.

5.1 Home theatre on apple dongles for that sweet sweet audiophile gore

He was referring to the issue of audio dropout via HDMI when the AVR is connected to a PC and the display resolution or refresh rate are changed.

What a lovely OSHA violation project! I am glad that some of my advice was of help.

Adding post-DSP SPDIF outputs to AVRs

Yes, I do mean smartphone repair.

Adding post-DSP SPDIF outputs to AVRs

The modification itself is fairly straightforward but it does require one to have some experience in reading datasheets and performing SMD work. Here is the full guide. You may be able to take your AVR to a local phone repair shop and provide instructions as to what you would like them to do.

    Enginerding with Weeb Labs

Early ground plane results. With the bass tone control in the default position, I was initially convinced that there might be a problem with my measurement but no; it is simply a terribly implemented control. Here you can see the effect of the bass tone control in the 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and...

    Enginerding with Weeb Labs

Review spoilers: They're mediocre out of the box and here are some preliminary measurements. In-room on-axis: Holy shelving, Batman! That was the very first audible problem that I noticed prior to capturing measurements. It begins precisely in the middle of the sibilance band. Isn't that...

    M-Audio BX3 Monitor Review

They included blocks for the AD but not DA. If they’re taking the time to illustrate one stage, why not the other?

    Enginerding with Weeb Labs

My next loudspeaker review will most likely be the JVC XS-D629BM, which are currently rather popular and available from Currys in the UK and Ireland for €100. They make use of the TPA3118D2, along with tone controls and Bluetooth. I will have to wait until I receive them to determine whether...
