Springs Under My Speakers: What's Happening?

More than plausible IMO, pretty well guaranteed! Changing mass and/or stiffness basically changes the frequency of the filter. More mass added at the speaker side will reduce the frequency from which isolation is effective as will reducing the stiffness of the springs. In handling terms using a...

    Hagerman Bugle3 Phono Stage Review

Maybe not. Removing spurious rubbish is worth it anyway IMHO.

    Hagerman Bugle3 Phono Stage Review

From a gadget POV so would I, I still have my Revox, but the pre-recorded tapes of the era were rapid duplicates and not as good as LPs for SQ. I Only used mine to make recordings myself but the DAT recorder I bought was markedly better still, so it has been for replay of old tapes only for...

    Hagerman Bugle3 Phono Stage Review

At the cantilever pivot, the “correct” place for accurate transduction is between cartridge body and record surface. Shure did make some cartridges that had it in the correct place, but also had to add some damping at the pivot so it would also not be too bad when people decided not to use it…...

Zero-emission vehicles, their batteries & subsidies/rebates for them.- No politics regarding the subsidies!

A sadly accurate summary of humans. They don’t want their prejudices spoiled by fact.

Zero-emission vehicles, their batteries & subsidies/rebates for them.- No politics regarding the subsidies!

I don't personally think EVs will be good for circuit racing any time soon, The Formula 1 hybrid regulations are more about marketing than performance, though they are super efficient they are heavy, about 300lb heavier and 10lb was equivalent to 10bhp on most circuits with the light cars, I...

    Hagerman Bugle3 Phono Stage Review

It isn't only rumble. Since a seismic sensor like a pickup cartridge/arm combination only starts to produce an accurate transduction from around 2x the natural frequency of the mass on the compliance (the exact value depends on damping which is forced to be in the "wrong" place for excellent...

Do you think there is any plausible possibility of producing large enough quantities of Biofuel when we can barely grow enough food to feed the worlds human poulation?

Help me with car choices, please

The UK car industry has been even worse hit, it no longer exists - Jaguar/Land Rover is Indian, Rolls Royce and Bentley belong to BMW and VW and so on. There are Toyota and Ford plants, none British, except the labour. I don't blame lack of national pride though. I blame the domestic banking...

Zero-emission vehicles, their batteries & subsidies/rebates for them.- No politics regarding the subsidies!

As a racing car aerodynamicist of 30+ years experience I am pretty sure this won't be significant. The difference in mass between the insects and air means it is unlikely the flow over a windscreen would be likely to carry significantly more insects over. The plumes of water in wet motor races...

Zero-emission vehicles, their batteries & subsidies/rebates for them.- No politics regarding the subsidies!

The very, very big change since I got my driving license here in the UK in 1967 is the number of insects around. Back then any drive in summer lead to a huge number of dead insects on the windscreen and frequent cleans. Now almost none. The difference is spectacularly big.

I asked our friends who have 4 wind turbines on their farm for over a decade now how many dead birds they have found and the answer was "none so far".

Wow, I’ve never seen anything like that anywhere in Europe. I’m surprised they even work efficiently that close together! This is our local wind farm https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4850/32994541588_a28a669e15_b.jpg

Zero-emission vehicles, their batteries & subsidies/rebates for them.- No politics regarding the subsidies!

That is part of the propaganda IMO. We have a lot of wind turbines here and they kill over 1000x fewer birds than domestic pet cats, for example. My wife’s best friend‘s farm has 4 wind turbines on, reasonably close to the farm and I have never heard them, 3 of them are in line not that far...

The thing about the Prius hybrid system, whether plug in or not, is the simplicity. That is what attracted me to it in the first place - I have run one since 2005. There is no clutch or multi ratio gearbox since neither are necessary in the layout. From a reliability POV my first Prius, now 17...

I don't care about stereo imaging - am I alone. (Poll)

I love brass bands but am not sure whether these will be available here, I'll look. I haven't been to my local library for some years and am not sure they still have CDs at all :(

Zero-emission vehicles, their batteries & subsidies/rebates for them.- No politics regarding the subsidies!

I'm surprised by the tardy takeup of renewables in the USA which is ideally suited to them. Perhaps years of expensive lobbying by the fossil fuel industry has distorted many residents perceptions.

An ex colleague of mine is involved in the synth fuels industry. It seems the process he is involved with uses a lot of energy so it is located near hydroelectric power somewhere in Scotland. Reading between the lines it seems it is likely only to be used to justify the continued use of IC...

I don't care about stereo imaging - am I alone. (Poll)

Again it is something inherent at least as much to the recording as to the equipment we listen on IME. I have heard a demo of DSP speaker correction of amplitude and phase step by step where the improvement in stereo image at each stage was quite marked in a simply miked oldish classical...
