Could you be more specific? Do you have to take them off because of something to do with the sound (distortion?) or a lack of physical comfort from the unit itself?

It strikes me that some companies like Harman have the R&D clout to tune headphones physically. For others without their resources, this may be a more cost-effective way forward.
