Inside of an Audio/Video Receiver (AVR)

This is an article I wrote for Widescreen Review Magazine a few months ago.

Inside Your AVR
Do you know what is inside your electronics? What is a DSP? The output stage? Power supply? FPGA? ASIC? Do these terms have any meaning? I suspect for many of you these are obscure terms. Yet, pick up the brochure for any audio/video product and such buzzwords abound. While it is impossible to convey the true nature of these technologies in an article like this, I think we can become more educated and at least have some high level understanding of what goes on inside your electronics. For this article, I am going to open the top of a premium AVR I purchased back in 2007. At the risk of stating the obvious, you are not going to become a design engineer from reading this one article. But rather, get you started on a journey to know more about what is under the hood and what type of design trade off a manufacturer may make. I hope to do...

Beware! Frequent Password Phishing Emails!

I don't know if others are getting these as well but I am getting a number of emails claiming to be from ASR and that my password has expired. These are NOT legitimate emails. Please don't click on their links. The emails are poorly formatted so you should be able to tell they are not real but others were more official looking. The "From" line in the last email was: "audiosciencereview.com <info @ gh-hyd.com>" Clearly that is not our domain although they could have easily spoofed that.

I just had a short email conversation with John who creates the REW software. When you think about it, it is pretty amazing that he provides this software free of charge. Think about the immense value REW has provided and continues to provide to the larger audio community!

I would therefore enocurage everyone who has used and found value from REW, to spend a minute to consider the value you have got from it, and then donate whatever you find appropriate to support his work! :)

Donating can be done easily through PayPal via the link below:

Forum Email Notifications Down (now resolved)

Our email service provider has paused our service due to a strange issue overnight. :( I am working on resolving it but currently, no automated email is sent from the system. So if you are expecting messages, thread notifications, etc., you won't be receiving them.

Issues are resolved for now and everything should be working.

Hello everyone.

It is my pleasure to announce that @Jimbob54 (Jim) to our moderation team. I hope I can count on all of you to to give him a warm welcome (to the new role). I would say let’s try to be on our best behavior. But, JimBob has been here long enough to know what he has stepped in, I mean stepped up for. :p

Seriously, we continue to grow and recently went past 56K members. Our sustained growth is showing no let up and if anything we are growing faster than I could have ever imagined, requiring an addition to our moderation team that shares our culture and goals. Jim was an easy pick. I appreciate him volunteering for this role and stepping up to help us keep this place running smooth and keeping the peace.

Welcome Aboard @Jimbob54. Let’s all give him some time to find his feet before we throw our next Troll Fest party.

Important: Another Wave of Account Hacks

We have had about half a dozen accounts taken over and spams posted in the name of the member. It is not a breach of our system. Somehow these people are getting a hold of member credentials and logging in. We usually ban them and try to contact the member if the spammer has not changed the email address.

If you have not recently changed your password, it may be a good idea to do so.

You may also want to enable 2-factor authentication. Note that this expires every 30 days and you must use an app on your phone to get an authorization code to login. If it is too much hassle, you can enable it now and then later disable.

For Audio Engineering Society Members and Associate Members

The Pacific Northwest Section of the Audio Engineering Society has presented meetings with jj that I and many of us really like and appreciate. The Chair of that group, Dan Mortensen, is trying to be nominated to be President of the parent AES organization, and needs 100 nominations from full voting Members, or from Associate members who want to upgrade their memberships in an easy procedure, in order to reach the ballot.

I have nominated him already, and encourage any of you who are willing to do so to read the document at this link:

I really like the work Dan has done to enable remote attendance using Zoom and such...

FAQ Questions on Audio/ASR

Hello everyone. One of the items on my TODO list has been to create Frequently Asked Question both about ASR in general, and audio in the specific. I have a good idea of what I like to include but thought I might be missing some. So would you please post what questions you think should be in the FAQ in either category?

Please don't try to answer the questions or argue with each other. I am just trying to get input on the questions that are common enough to go into FAQ.

Thanks,

Change in Requirement for Posting Items for Sale

Hello you all.

It seems that we continue to get reports of people getting scammed either privately or by listing gear for sale. We had a rule of having X number of posts before offering items for sale but a) this was not enforced through forum software (no easy way to do that) and b) wasn't enough of a barrier. The proper technical solution is to have an existing class of members that can post items for sale. We chose to make that the Forum Donors. No, we did not do this to make money. We are doing this because we have a level of trust with members who have supported the forum.

In addition to above, some of our special members (such as Technical Experts) have privilege to create threads/post items for sale.

Please note that we do NOT read or see your private messages. If you have doubt and issues with people approaching you in private, please report their messages and then we can take action.

Appreciate your understanding as we work through a proper way to manage this...
