Hifi manufacturers know how to capitalize on the craving for vintage. Preferably with brushed steel. Some examples of newly made with a vintage look. JBL, Yamaha and Vincent. .

The demand for vintage is probably largely due to the fact that now middle-aged men with the right thick wallet can buy their dream they had in their teens.

If a Technics SE-A5 will appear on the used market where I live, I will buy it immediately. For nostalgic reasons and because I'm curious about how my youth's unattainable power amplifier sounds like. I think it still looks nice.

If, on the other hand, I buy new hifi, I have completely different critical glasses on. Read tests on ASR for example. Evaluates different solutions against each other etc etc. For the most part I also do not care what the stuff looks like. It's a small advantage if the speakers do not look too ugly. They are a part of the furniture in the living room, so ..

what is that last one? it says new class A on it

As someone who had to work with tape machines professionally, even pictures of those things give me the willies. They were a massive drag to use, remind me of lots of fiddly back breaking work, they weren't very ergonomic, and I'm grateful to be in a fully digital work flow.

You're right, they can be a hassle to use and maintain, but they're a whole lot cooler looking in operation than a digital black box, like the ProTools interfaces at the bottom of one of the racks. ;)

Hi, as thewas mentioned Technics SE-A5.

Technics named the topology, and their constructions for class AA and later they created new class A. If I remember correctly.
How much was new? How do these constructions differ from "traditional" class A? The technically interested can find a lot of information on the internet about this. Among other things about a patent dispute between a Dr. Sandman and his construction class S and Technis class AA. A little interesting technical hifi history.:)

Picture of Technis SU V3. Why this amplifier? It was the first own amplifier I bought after as a 13 year old worked as hell during a summer vacation to get money together for it and a pair of speakers. I think it still has a nice look, for obvious reasons mentioned.

Many years later I bought a Technis SU V3. Did it sound as good as I did when I was 13 years old? My tip. Let nostalgic old teenage/childhood memories be. Do not put them to the test as you get older. It sounded .... well..it sounded anyway ..Or it sounded ..well what one can expect from such an amplifier. I guess it was just that I got it in my head that it would sound great. These nostalgic memories.:)

Pretty much anything made by Accuphase or the old Sony Esprit and ES series of the 80's and 90's.

Speaking of Technics.Yummy yummy . :)

Technics SA-1000

Introducing the Technics SA-1000. With more power and less distortion than any other receiver we've made: 330 watts per channel minimum RMS into 8 Ω from 20 Hz-20 kHz with no more than 0.03% Total Harmonic Distortion. But that's only one reason to buy the SA-1000. Dynamic range is another.
To capture the sheer dynamics of a live symphony, there's an equally dynamic amplifier section. Like 72,000uF worth of high capacitance filtering, separate DC rectifiers, current-mirror loading and direct coupling. The results are impressive: tremendous reserve power, negligible transient crosstalk distortion and excellent stability.
And just for the record, the SA-1000's phono equalizer gives you everything from a super-high S/N ratio of 97 dB. To a phono input that can handle a 300 mV signal at 1 kHz.

...In my eyes small heat sinks. Looks to be built-in. Wondering how that cooling works once it runs hard. In any case, this thread is about appearance so it does not matter.:)

I like the look of the Philips 'Black Tulip' kit. This to me is what hi-fi equipment should look like. I hate the look of equipment that's been 'styled'. I'm buying something to do a job not to decorate my home. Form should follow function.

upload photo

I did set out to collect it all but only got as far as obtaining the pre and power amps,

By the way. Appearance. My mother's speakers she uses in the bedroom. B&W 202i.

You can not with the best will in the world say that it is speakers that look good (sound matters less, my mother does not care). But I'm putting on
plastic veneers for $ 8 on them. At least now they are not butt ugly.:) Anyway, I think so ... and my mother agrees.

Rigged up a bit temporarily while I fix the other speaker.

I also include pictures of her vintage receiver. Luxor 5082 R. It has a classic stylish vintage look. I think. Not "high-end" but nice.

....You should be careful not to put hi-fi on amplifiers. The cooling can be affected. In this case, it's all right.
