Friend bought 901's - what can I get him to buy to replace them. He is rich but for some reason is locked into cheap used stereo stuff...

JBL something. Do they have to be old, or just cheap and used.?

I dunno but I think he likes used stuff. He also bought some used nad items for pre/amp.

I'll just suggest some brands to him and see what he wants to do.

@Wes you don't happen to have some Elac DBR62s or Focal Chorus 706 he can audition do you? :)

Kinda need to know if they have to be used and if they have to be old to make the best recommendation. If 'no' and 'no' then I'd say these guys. (Hey, technically used.)

But don't mind me. I'd grab a pair of 901s if they came up. :D

If I could easily afford it, I might buy a pair of 901s just to hear what they were about. Same with the Quad ESL-57.

How about Revel F208, or depending on what rich means here, the beryllium ones or even the Salon2.

I mean, the Bose 901's are a totally unique and irreplaceable experience, kinda like Ibogaine. Once one is sucked into that specific sonic experience, there is no hope of escape.

With enough power, original 901s with their equalizer have serious bass output and can make great surround speakers.

I thought about that, too but remember the Bose has 8 rear firing drivers and just one front firing and is intended to bounce sound off the rear wall, resulting in a large but very diffuse soundstage. The 90 might be the closest option to the 901 but it’s still fundamentally different in design.

Reminds me my friend who likes to buy used and vintage stuff from the seventies and somewhat later.

He bought these
Vintage Grundig Audiorama 400 speakers
