No kidding, I signed up for Qobuz's free trial last night and they asked age, gender. . . "-Male" "-Female" "-Non-binary"

Dang, those French peeps are with it!

“A woman is as old as she looks... a man is as old as he feels”
Or as Groucho Marx said: “A man is only as old as the woman he feels.” ;)

Maybe it would be better to ask for Sex instead of Gender, as there can not be anything in the middle (unless you had it cut-off), just two simple answers, no matter what your real gender is...just saying.

Oh, but there can. There are people with XXY chromosomes (Klinefelter syndrome), for instance, and also XX/XY chimerism. The latter, especially, can result in ambiguous genitalia.

The real question is why a music streaming service wants to know what's in your pants.

Females and Males may like different music types, also different countries listen to different bands and genres too, so probably this may be helpful for them after all.

But this is an audio forum. Overwhelmingly male, no real need to look into our collective pants. The answer is obvious.

Same reason everyone and their mother who's service you sign up for, wants your number. eBay, if you're a seller on the platform, now they want social security numbers. Jeez it's really annoying.

Wouldn't they notice soon enough what music you listen to?

eBay has a legitimate reason (fraud prevention) to request some personal information.

Yeah, fraud, only a very recent problem I imagine.

It's used as a variable in determining things like "people who liked that also liked this", "people who bought that also bought this"...
Part of the retail planning thing. ...Influences supply side too.
[And that is where the problem with Spotify starts - eventually influencing and determining what people like and want, and therefore what is produced.]

Come on old bean , bit of gender politics never hurt anyone ha ha ...

A good example of something seemingly innocuous going sour online ..' shugs and sips beer '

Trying to keep up with and foresee all the ways people can be offended could turn this into a job!

I hope you've got your silk jammies on as well. I can almost hear a wicked cackle as you stir the pot...;)

What is gender? Do you mean sex? as in male/female? I assume 95% here are males.

Gender is male/female/etc. designation. Sex is [?] sex. (Often used somewhat incorrectly, like "sexing" an animal in the context of humans breeding them, meaning to find out whether the newborn animal is male or female.) So there are references to gender-based violence, gender discrimination, and so on. You can see how "sex-based violence" would be something else.
