GIK Acoustics absorption panels

In search of acoustic treatment for my new house, I recently purchased approximately a dozen acoustic panels from GIK Acoustics. I'd considered other manufacturers--ATS, RealTraps, MSR, and RPG--and I settled on GIK Acoustics because, based on the measurements, they appeared to be the most cost-effective solution available. The ATS traps are cheaper but do not have the same low-frequency absorption as the GIK panels, which seem to be measurably superior. If I had bought panels from RealTraps, MSR, or RPG, I would have had to spend a small fortune to treat the listening room.

The major upsides of the GIK Acoustics panels are that they work and that they are very inexpensive. With two "monster" bass traps in the rear corners, four freestanding full-range bass traps on the side walls, two freestanding "gobo" absorption panels, and two ceiling-mounted full-range 244 bass traps, the sound in my room took an enormous leap subjectively. It's no secret on this forum that I prefer listening with BACCH processing, and BACCH works best without early reflections. The "imaging" that can be heard with my system now is extraordinary, and the sense of acoustic space from most recordings is difficult to reconcile with your brain's knowledge that you are in a 14' x 21' room in a suburban house. The sound is measurably better than it was before, too, with my Dutch & Dutch 8Cs requiring much less parametric EQ to get an even in-room response. After I adjust placement of the panels a bit more and play with the 8Cs, I will post measurements.

I paid around $1,800 for all these panels. If I had gotten a similar quantity of panels from RealTraps, MSR, or RPG, I would have paid two to five times what I paid for the GIK panels.

The major downsides of the GIK Acoustic panels are shipping, customer service, and, above all, quality control.

It took quite a bit longer for my panels to arrive than GIK originally estimated. GIK attributed this delay to a power outage. (The power was out for a week?) Then I received a shipping notice that nine boxes had shipped via FedEx Ground. I had someone stay at the house on the delivery date only for four boxes--not the promised nine--to show up. I called GIK about the five missing boxes, and their representative, who seemed somewhat annoyed to be taking my call, said that the other five boxes were "on the truck" at GIK's factory waiting to go out. Someone had to stay at the house the following week to receive the other five boxes.

When all the panels had shown up, I began unboxing them and assembling them, starting with the freestanding panels. The freestanding bass traps and gobos all arrived intact, but the pilot holes in the bottom of the panels to screw in the metal floor stands were crooked--on every single panel, and crooked in slightly different ways on all of them. (See pictures below.) They don't look very nice with their metal stands in the bottom all pointing in slightly different directions.

This is an easy thing for anyone to fix, so no big deal. But it raises the question why GIK Acoustics couldn't drill the holes straight in the first place.

Because I planned to ceiling-mount all four of the 244 bass traps that I ordered, I ordered four "cloud" mounting brackets. These were thrown haphazardly into a box that contained two 244 bass traps and were shaking around the box. One of the 244 bass traps in the box was broken (see picture below), and one of the butterfly toggle bolts used to affix the bracket to the ceiling had a broken spring. The 244 panel pictured below cannot be used with the cloud mounting bracket that I purchased for it because the bracket mounts to the cross brace that is broken on this panel.

broken panel.jpg

I emailed GIK about the broken bracket and toggle bolt last Wednesday. Their rep responded with a shipping label for the broken panel and toggle bolt. While it's nice that GIK covers return shipping, I was clear that I didn't want to ship the panel and receive a new panel (that's at least one more day that I have to ask someone to stay at the house)--I'll just find a use for it other than ceiling mounting, and I'll endeavor to fix it to the extent required for that use.

I emailed GIK six days ago requesting resolution and sent a follow-up yesterday. My emails were exceedingly polite--perhaps too polite in the circumstances. No response.

If you want inexpensive acoustic panels that work, but which have bad quality control and cosmetic defects, and if you are comfortable dealing with poor customer service, then the GIK panels may be a good option for you.

However, I'm left wondering if it wasn't worth splurging for some RealTraps.

(I recently purchased $2,500 or so of weightlifting equipment from Rogue. There were two slight issues with my order. The contrast between Rogue's professionalism in resolving the issues and the quality of service that I have observed from GIK Acoustics is striking. And I shouldn't need to tell members of this forum how excellent the dealers @Purité Audio and @suttondesign are when an issue arises.)

I would post this review in the acoustics subforum on Gearslutz. Glenn Kuras is a regular poster there.

Thanks for that suggestion, and I've read on GS about quality control issues with these panels! I've hardly posted on GS before, so I'll leave my thoughts on these panels here for now.

I'll continue to communicate with GIK the old-fashioned way (email and phone) but figured I'd report the problems to our members so that they can make slightly more informed purchases.

Do you have a picture of the ceiling panels installed? The ceiling is about the only treatable area in my lounge, but I'm struggling to picture them installed.

Iv been down this road , GIK are cheap and cheerful. If your not worried about the look of your room and are on a tight budget they will do. Also if you plan on hiding them behind a false screen then it dose not matter what they look like.

There's better looking and better built options but they cost more.

If your planning on living with it for the long haul I'd look into how to blend room acoustics within a good looking domestic environment.

I'm fairly confident your GIK panels will be in a skip or in the loft within 18 months ( maybe much much sooner ha ha ) and you would of moved on to another solution. Possibly with the help of a room acoustic specialist.

Being too obsessed with the sound and sacrificing the feel and livability of the room is a mistake imo. The rooms look and feel must be inviting, make the sound the best you can around that.

Please see attached.

It's damned difficult to get multiple panels to look straight with the GIK cloud mounting brackets, which, at $15 a piece, are inexpensive yet wildly overpriced for what they are.

Note also the errant hole in my ceiling that I need to fill. There was a joist there that I could not detect before I started drilling.

I stuck mine with pink grip drywall adhesive.

Thanks. I think our ceiling is so low that they won't work.

Hey Dialectic,

This is Glenn the owner of GIK Acoustics. First of all I would like to apologize for any problems you had with our products and would like to ask that you personally reach out to me so I can get this resolved for you. It seems a lot of the problems you had was with shipping but the other problems with things, like the feet concern me and would like to solve them. The other MAJOR concern is the lack of customer service you seems to have not gotten on the issues. I built this company on giving the best customer service possible so I am quite embarrassed at this point. Problems do come up in any company but if they can be solved with good customer service then generally speaking the customer is happy. This clearly did not happen so I would like to take over your case personally to make sure it does. I don't have your name so if you would not mind contacting me at glenn.k at gikcoustics dot com that would be great. Once again I am sorry about this and look forward to solving any issues you had.

I have had very good luck over the years with GIK. i always pay the upcharge for gilford fabrics as I like the look of this color. Also, they have good response to requesting room analysis and purchasing advice. I did this previously in my old house but now that i have moved and the dimensions of my room have changed I need to send GIK a message getting advice on how best to setup the pieces I have and augment accordingly. I know that some REW measurements would be required information to provide with my dimensions and picture but i've been very lazy lately not wanting to pull out that software and get it running again with my mac...

I also want to get my cloud mounted but my ceilings are 13 feet and my ladder does not make me feel super comfortable. I wonder how critical that is in my new room? Glenn, any advice based on this photo? Cheers.

Thanks for chiming in and LOVE the picture. :) 13 feet is GREAT and will for sure help, but still at that height it would be considered a early reflection coming from the ceiling so I would treat it. BTW over all you seem to have things setup pretty well, but always feel free to contact us with questions.

Dialectic,

I did figure out who you are and also sent you a email with my phone number. When you have a moment please give me a call. BTW I also figured out you where the customer that had a problem with the feet that I was told about. When I investigated the problem several weeks ago, I found our jig we have was pretty old and the holes where a bit "hit or miss" (total understatement lol) and that indeed I could see why the holes would have not been done right. Since then I changed the jig from wood to metal and fitted it differently to not have this problem in the future. So thank you for making us aware of it as it did help us solve it in the future. :)

Glenn, welcome to ASR, and thank you so much for tracking me down! I saw my phone going off this afternoon, but I was in meetings and couldn't pick it up.

I will try to reach you tomorrow.

(Man, I didn't think my post above would be noticed by anyone other than the type of hardcore ASR member that tends to read every thread. But I guess such is the power of the Internet...)

Had a friend send the thread to one of my guys at work. I am just glad I saw it. Looking forward to chatting tomorrow.

I bought a couple of these awhile back. Same thing on both of mine: feet not parallel to each other and not perpendicular to the edge of the panel.

I have a few of these panels (black 242 panels). I also have BACCH. As these are in a cinema room that is all-black, they actually blend in nicely.
I am setting up a lighter room with some devialet phantom golds. Again the idea will be to reduce first reflections as much as possible. I think the aesthetics will be a bigger challenge for this room.

I had my dedicated listening room outfitted with GIK. I was very happy with the sales and shipping experience. They installed well (I had a handyman friend install the ceiling cloud) and look good. Combined with a Home Audio Fidelity convolution plugin for Roon, imaging and tonal balance is subjectively excellent. I’m very happy with them, but I do plan to add more corner tri-traps.

I'm in the UK and have bought from GIK over a number of years. Whilst I haven't had any major problems there were a few minor hiccups but I always found they were resolved in a friendly professional manner. My stuff has been up in my dedicated room for seven years and I have no thoughts of putting them in a skip or loft!

On ceiling treatment, a lot depends on your speakers dispersion characteristics as well as room height and shape. Mine are ribbons and I was told they have a 30 degree vertical dispersion. I did experiment by jamming a panel with a 'T' shaped bar to the ceiling and detected no change so I don't use ceiling panels. Another way would be to somehow suspend a panel over the top front edge of your speakers to hear if things change. I would also be a bit concerned about reflections from the leather footstool. You could move it out of the way to see what effect that has. Leather is apparently quite reflective, fabric less so.
