Need your opinions!

2 options going forward:
1. Keep the current colour-coding system, which groups countries, and sorts companies according to the country
2. Go back to colour-less and sorted by Company Name, regardless of country
1 looks good and easy to read.

maybe we should do a sort to differentiate between speaker manufacturers whose main activity is this and the others?

as well as the craft companies which do not produce much?

I know it's a lot of work !! but then we'll do it maybe later because making an exhaustive directory country by country is not easy !!:)

Great list, thank you!

Just a small point - I'm not sure how you are defining "active," but MagicLX (Germany) do not sell passive speakers in the sense that their Linkwitz designs do not use internal passive x-over components - they all require external analogue or digital x-overs/eq and amps.

I think this would still be active. For the largest active pro monitors the amps and crossovers are in separate external boxes.

Yes, they are active speakers in my book, too. All SL's designs are active, but many people think of active speakers as having the x-over/amps in the speaker box.

Probably the easiest way would be define what active & passive mean in @sweetchaos's opening post.

it is not a question of separating anything, but of distinguishing the main activity.
jbl for loudspeakers and high-end products has chosen to call itself JBL Synthesis to differentiate itself from jbl consumer.
example in france there is totaldac which makes today a loudspeaker but their main activity is the digital ... I could cite dozens of examples like this one.
there is no question of distinguishing between good and bad products because it would be difficult to be objective without measures.

Well, it was just an idea ...:)

It would be interesting, but difficult.

For example, JBL/Harman have the controlling share in the live reinforcement/PA speaker market and have many other divisions, including a partnership with Lincoln for car audio.

If we start going after all the OEMs and parts manufacturers this will quickly become unmanageable. It is also a question of whether or not to include the very small speakers in cellphones, tablets and other small devices (like toys, where I understand ESS previously had a really strong hold with their DAC chips).

Would we include Samsung for their soundbars?
Interesting question, which I can't answer. But the Loudspeaker Industry Sourcebook offers a broader view than simply looking at the major driver catalogs.
@HammerSandwich previously posted the very useful resource above: https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/active-speaker-oems.11089/#post-313567

We should not be simply replicating the work that went into that catalogue.

Suggestion, switch to non-marker version (just colors in the country). Also, change the color scheme, as red usually means bad and right now a medium amount (~50) is gray. I would set the minimum to light green, middle to medium green and max to dark green, or whatever colors, just have them the same.

I think this correlates with from where the ASR readers are. Most US and Europe i'am shure there are much more Indian, Chinese , Japan speaker manfakturer. But there is the language barriere and if no readers that know the language help it looks biased.
