"A unique and powerful collaboration between the artist and poet Danny Simmons and legendary jazz bassist Ron Carter. This live recording from BRIC House in Brooklyn captured Simmons reading poetry from his collection of prose The Brown Beatnik Tomes with projections of his own striking Abstract Expressionist paintings providing the stage backdrop while Carter performed solo accompaniment along with instrumental interludes from his fleet trio."

Ron Carter is having such an interesting (and extended) late career. He seems to have carved at yet another voice (on his bass) as compared to his early and mid careers, and seems to be taking on recordings or performances in many types of settings, where he is clearly heard in a natural yet melodic sense as part of the performance.

I had the pleasure of experiencing him live at the World Stage in Los Angeles many years ago...

Apple Music suggested I give Oliver Nelson a closer listen. I had never given him the attention that he merits. It’s a shame he died at age 43. From what I’ve heard so far I can pretty much recommenced anything he ever did.

This is his most iconic tune, which I’ve heard here and there probably dozens or hundreds of times, but the rest of his recordings are a goldmine waiting to be explored. He seems to have been an amazing musician from composing to arranging to playing saxophone and clarinet to the great talent he attracted to play around him.
