I bought a Onkyo TX-RZ50 with the intention of powering speakers externally.

Probably depends on the power from the AVR. I know mine was getting thinner, so I wanted to put some amps in place. I think it not sounding different is probably a good thing. Perhaps with harder to drive speakers or higher volumes it might make a difference.
