What is the point of CD rips?

Of course it does, just google for it. Of all the many confidence tricks perpetrated in this game over the years I'd still put 'hi res' digital as number one.

Master Thread: Are measurements Everything or Nothing?

Not really. Assuming load is not a factor (although it often is) they all sound the same when level matched and not clipping. For the few that don't there will be some mundane technical explanation (e,g high input impedance) Amplifiers aren't musical instruments, they don't have their own...

    Audio Note speakers

In the 1990s they would advertise in the UK press. Two whole pages of text in type so small it needed a magnifying glass to read it. I did once, it was just waffle about how they have got it right and everyone else has got it wrong. Real 'Through the looking-glass' stuff.

    Audio Note speakers

They have mid bass - lots of it especially when in the corners. And it's loose and woolly. I know some are crazy about Audionote and they've been going a long time but they don't actually sell much product which I suspect accounts for the discrepancy between the price and the material content...

IME the recommendation for corner placement just makes it worse. Seen it described as a 'Comedy bass hump.' It does sort of enhance the realism of a double bass in a jazz trio or quartet, I grant you that, but it's a disaster with other types of music.

How people choose very expensive High-End speakers?

I think there's more fun and satisfaction in putting together something really good for as little as possible. Even if I was super-rich I'd still have that mindset. I can't really think of any six figure plus system I've listened to where I've not thought I could do as good or better for a...

How people choose very expensive High-End speakers?

My second month in sales when I got my bonus (the first month's bonus had cleared all my debts) I went up town to the big record store (HMV) and went around and bought everything I wanted. It was like they said to me 'It's all free just help yourself'. Previously I'd struggled to cobble...

    Clayton Amps

any competent amp with have a flat FR can't see the Clayton being any different. EQ would seem to be a better solution to your problem.

Exactly. Even without the staggering eleven grand apportioned to nonsense, it's still very poor bang for the buck.

    Stereophile and Audio Cables

The question was 'when did cable reviews become normalised?' though, not 'When did specialist cables start being sold?' QED 79 strand was the original in the UK and might have been a bit better for some set ups than lamp cord due to the lower gauge. That came on sale in the 1970s. Ascribing...
