I have the C298 connected directly to a Topping D70S DAC. Should I set gain to fixed or reduce gain and use the opamps in the D70S "more"? (input XLR cables). It sounds very good, however later I might want to put a pre amp in or is that not necessary with this set up?

For me goes the same. I have the XTZ Edge (Ice module) and when I added the Schiit Saga+ to it, it sounded more "musical" to my ears, and the soundstage got wider and deeper. Sold the Saga+ (kept the Edge) and got the Musical Fidelity M5si, which sounded a little better in every way. Now I am...
