As a kid, I would disassemble everything to see how it worked and if it couldn’t be improved !
I now only disassemble when it needs repairs !
I love to find a way to improve a design or be more creative about it’s use…
This is a fundamental with a “taste” of what mixing / mastering is all about push trough your “vision” of what a piece ought to be, what “you” in it heard at first listen…
I studied EE and CS and Audio recording, maybe not in that order .
Started my first company to produce some little hardware products with a drawing software ( I had not written), I wrote the low level routines for the interface for early PC’s before drawing CAD software like Autocad became main stream..That was for the European office of a Japanese company called Mutoh.
.
I went on to be afterwards a young consultant for them, eventually to be partner in another company where I wrote again some software eventually to create yet another company that first distributed large format scanners and raster software for Auotocad and where again I want back to writing some document management software, this adventure lasted till the end of my “business” carrer…
Now I am back at what I wanted to do in the first place Music, recording, electronic !
In the last 8-9 years I build from scratch a recording studio, mostly alone ! (I learned construction, plumbing, roofing , obviously electricity or heating..and even wood construction , before I called it quits to open the studio…)
The aim of the studio is to do “direct” to vinyl mostly analogue audio recording…a somewhat stil unique proposition in Europe after 9 years, I initiated the project
I plan to open soon !
In the process of prepping the studio I am back at Electronic , repair and test all my gears , improve when I can, learn all there is to push the envelope of the gear I own, preferably better than it originally was !
Although , I learned electronics it’s been a long time with no practice, so I started myself on a refresher course and found on YouTube some engineering courses classes on Electronics that where so much better than what I learned and had been exposed too…So I am continuing my reeducation ! I didn’t have so much repair experience, which I start now accumulating , in the process.
Mastering Vinyl engraving (cutters, heads, RIAA etc… ) will be the next challenge ( although I graduated recording on a Neuman lathe )
I almost forgot, I prefer (trying) improving myself, than buying the latest greatest…not my philosophy
