Bruno Putzeys reaches out to the subjectivists

Yes. He clearly thinks that being an "audiophile" is about the hardware itself. He's not alone and it's a disincentive for manufacturers to create truly transparent gear. If you have one that's transparent and one that's not, and you don't know which is which, there's really no way to find out...

Bruno Putzeys reaches out to the subjectivists

I had a discussion on Reddit with someone who clearly has no technical background and also has no love for measurements. Their greatest hits include wondering what nylon guitar strings are made of and something something about visible light being fundamentally physically different than...

Snake oil and fraud in the professional audio community

I would say that any sound coming directly from an instrument has zero distortion by definition. The issue you bring up here is where does the instrument end and the recording begin? If you're only talking about jazz in a studio room, then sure, maybe you can try for "transparently recorded...

Snake oil and fraud in the professional audio community

This is something that I've noticed is more widespread than I ever would have thought. We imagine specialists to be very knowledgeable, which would imply that they are constantly updating their knowledge necessary for their profession. The truth is that most senior level anything are basically...

Stream of consciousness buying process, or Talk me off the "inaudible" cliff.

Thank you for that recommendation! I re-visited their product line and they do in fact have XLR inputs as options on all (I think) of their subs and as a standard option on some. They are also competitively priced with the HSUs and I think will be a better fit for my needs with the servo...

Is Tidal HiFi Worth It and What Sort Of DAC Should You Use?

In the settings (Ctrl+P) you can turn off "Loudness Normalization". Maybe it works better if you listen in a more "radio" or "playlist" style, but it doesn't work well for me at all, it just turns the volume up or down randomly. It's not actually random, but it sure seems that way. You can see...

So, you think you are golden ears...

My comment was a full endorsement of yours. If anything was added is that different types of actions in response to different stimuli don't help one in this particular action with this particular stimuli. That is, my playing trombone didn't seem to help much with this action, it was like playing...

So, you think you are golden ears...

I used to play trombone. I did a bit worse than average on this test the first time, but I never tried to hear pitches this way. When do you ever listen for 1/64 up or down? You just adjust the slide to match the pitch, which I can (or could) do quite well. The second time I did a lot better...

Amazon launches lossless high-res music service!

Oof, could you imagine listening to such a thing? You'd have to sit in a chamber, trying to not breathe just to hear the quiet parts, then BOOM!!!! 96dB in your face. Sitting there trying to get your earplugs in.

Amazon launches lossless high-res music service!

I can confirm that I expect both.

Amazon launches lossless high-res music service!

You'll note that streamed music isn't counted in volume. Given that current volumes aren't much less than 70s era volumes even without streaming, we can conclude that a significantly larger number of people now have access to music. I would expect actual revenues to increase to CD heyday...

Amazon launches lossless high-res music service!

Volume sales are less. Revenue is about the same in real dollars, i.e. after adjusting for inflation. Still no Kraft dinner. Well, maybe with fancy dijon ketchup. Thanks for the graphs!

Amazon launches lossless high-res music service!

Physical sales are 9% of all sales. I'd like to know what you consider "crushing" if you don't think it's already happened. Regarding getting rid of a format, I'm sure they'll sell it to you any way you want it. Vinyl and cassette still exist. I don't see all jewel case manufacturers...

Amazon launches lossless high-res music service!

You mean DRM. There is a lot of options when it comes to the delivery and distribution of digital copies, but I think the music industry showed everyone that relying on hard copy "ownership" isn't realistic in the digital age. Software, movies, games, music, etc. are all copyrighted...
