I believe Trinnov suggested / hinted in one of their webinars that improvements to the Trinnov Optimizer will be released this Fall with improved bass optimization.
Their current bass optimization works fine by the way, but yes - there are some indication that it will further improve; especially for 4-16 subs.

If they implement some kind of sub calibration that works like MSO, that would be huge. Nothing made the difference in my system like MSO.

MSO? MultiSubOptimisation?
I cannot see how Trinnov can move the subs to a different physical location for you. ;) Will MSO adjust amplitude, phase and timing for each sub for optimal total response?

MSO doesn't do that either. It will, however, do everything you mentioned after physically move the subs.

4 extra channels coming to all Altitudes installed after 2015, by firmware update in October, free of charge
https://essentialinstall.com/news/h...more-channels-and-imax-enhanced-for-altitude/
So I don't believe such Toslink to 4-channel DAC exists? I did some quick search in pro and consumer gear and I can only find 2-channel DACs off of Toslink. Does anybody know what DAC Trinnov has in mind for this upgrade? This is EXACTLY the upgrade I wanted because I was hoping to go full Auro3D but it would've limited my subwoofer count - well, no mas!

HDMI 2.1 does not offer much for most of us, and there is little or no 8K content yet, so... Personally in my setup, with a 65" screen about 8' away, the biggest improvement from 4K was HDR, ot the higher pixel count.

YMMV - Don

Doesn't it offer support for 32 channels? I'm desperately waiting and hoping 2.1 will solve my EQ issues. I tried for a couple months to get Audiolense working for my Auro3D setup. Since 2.0 only supports 7.1, I had to try and get ASIO to work, but was never able to take a successful measurement over ASIO(tried 3 different windows machines and 2 different AVRs). I was hoping 2.1 would let us bury ASIO, which IME is super buggy.

You need to look for DAC with ADAT compatible input.
Something in this direction:
https://gearspace.com/gear/behringer/ultragain-pro-8-digital-ada8000
I'm also sure Trinnov support can guide you in the right direction for compatible devices.

OK, I was totally sniffing up the wrong tree. I'll have to reach out to Trinnov then for a list of approved DACs. This quote from the press release made it sound easy: "Altitude owners can enable four extra outputs with the addition of a simple external D/A converter." LOL "simple" external DAC my eye!

Looks like these simple optical ADAT to 8-channel converters should work too:
  1. No frills Aphex $400 https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/141--aphex-model-141
  2. RME ADI-4 DD $950 https://www.rme-usa.com/adi-4-dd.html

I'm sure you can get a compatible ADAT adapter and use any DAC as well. I'm sure you will get some suggestions from Trinnov support, just ask what they used for testing (usually they don't want to sell or recommend devices from other brands, but asking what they have used will give you a good suggestion).

ADAT is only applicable for Altitude16, it is much easier with Altitude32.

Your suggested devices will most probably work fine as well.

ADAT is a standard, so should work regardless.

HDMI 2.1 increases the video bandwidth, from 18 Gbps to 48 Gbps, and adds dynamic HDR or something like that, but AFAIK doesn't do anything for standard audio. Unless you are thinking of eARC? I don't use ARC so not sure about that.

eARC specifically supports Dolby TrueHD (lossless Atmos) but you don't need HDMI 2.1 for eARC audio support as eARC was offered with HDMI 2.0. The new 2.1 standard is very specific to the additional bandwidth for support of 4K120 10-bit gaming or 8K30 content.

The Altitudes will calibrate each sub separately. An alternative is using the active crossover function to set level and delay for each sub separately followed by a single Optimizer correction applied to all subs.

The RME Digiface USB seems a much cheaper option to convert 1 x 4-Channel ADAT at 96 kHz/channel to 2 separate stereo 96Khz SPDIF optical streams. Each of the 4 optical I/Os can be set as SPDIF or ADAT.

If all you need is 2 channels, the ADI2-Pro FS could be an option, too. It has a digital pass-thru mode that will re-send all ADAT input channels back to the digital outputs, but IIRC only the first two can be monitored.
