AFAIK the SE is black (Amazon only ?) and the normal one was white/brown which did not appeal to most people and why they launched the black (SE) version.

They certainly smooth the midrange with the 650. That's quite a difference.
I'm not a HP junkie and I'll probably die with my 650s

Looking for some help from a kind soul. I've got Mac OS X, Amazon Music HD, D30/A30Pro Combo, HD 6xx headphones.

I'd like to try adding EQ. I read through the supplementary related threads and too a shot with SoundForce but the settings were hard to adjust (tiny point you move around with a mouse) and the terminology RougeAmoeba uses didn't match up up with Amir's (peak/dip).

Is there a straightforward way (what software/settings?) for me to try the settings Amir recommends in the review?

Ideally I'd like to apply the settings only to Amazon HD application and assign the output to D30pro (which Sound Source seemed to do) but Sound Source gave me like 30 minutes before it started white noise over the music unless I bought it. 30 minutes was not enough time to get it configured...so I would prefer something else just on principle because they think that's good business.

Looking for some help ...
Bought SoundSource, could someone help how to translate Amir's recommended settings into format SoundSource needs? I found AUNBandEQ Plugin but the input values are different than what Amir provides.

If someone is familiar with SoundSource, I'd really appreciate the help. Thanks.

You can load in a custom parametric EQ settings file with the following syntax and method:

https://rogueamoeba.com/support/knowledgebase/?showArticle=SoundSource-Custom-HPEQ

They have a zipped example file to get you started. Just change the settings as needed. Otherwise it looks like the EQ in the GUI is a fixed 10-band graphic EQ which will not give you as much control.

I'm still struggling to translate these to a format SoundSource can use. Is there a preamp value? Or set to zero? Is PK (Peak/Bell) the same as Peak/Dip?

Here's what I came up with:

Preamp: 0.0 dB
Filter 1: ON LS Fc 75 Hz Gain 3.0 dB Q 1.0
Filter 2: ON LS Fc 40 Hz Gain 4.2 dB Q 1.0
Filter 3: ON PK Fc 7600 Hz Gain 4.0 dB Q 3.0
Filter 4: ON PK Fc 13700 Hz Gain -3.5 dB Q 4.0

Does that look right?

@D700

If you want these to work in soundsource, just create .txt file and copy pasta the filters in it and add them under headphone EQ as "add other profile".

Have I translated the values correctly? I have never messed with this stuff before so its trial an error...mostly error at this point.

Didn't sound good, clipping I think and seeing red peaking in the little bar in soundforce . I added -6.0 db as Preamp to see what would happen. Volume reduced substantially and red peaking gone....but don't know what that value should be in comparison to Amir's.

@D700 Look up the values Auto EQ for parametric. These are based on measurements from several different sources, maybe one of them will help. Btw Soundsource has these EQ's built in if you select profile and type in HD650.

I checked SoundSource for HD650, nothing returns. I see built in effects for overdrive, 10band eq and Audio Unit Effects> Apple

There is a specific Headphone EQ in effects but I assume that comes with paid software.

Thanks for the screenshot. Yeah, none of those are showing. Is there a file to import for all those or did it come with the app? I just downloaded an application file and moved to applications folder.

I had an old HD-580 and upgraded it with the HD-600 grills and some HD-650 drivers.
Everything else is the same, but I did get new HD-650 pads.
How close in sound to the official HD-650 do you think it will be?

The drivers are most likely not matched very well, so there is that.
I imagine slightly less bass due to less clamp.

Has anyone actually measured the Franken-650.
If so can you post some frequency graphs?

It will be a HD650 with just a different color scheme.
Assuming the HD650 drivers came including the baffle.
When you were just changing the capsules (drivers) then it may be slightly different.
