Actually the volume controls on most of their covers is 42 and that's a tribute to the ultimate answer to question What is the meaning of the Life, the Universe, and Everything? It's 42. That's a Douglas Adam's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy quote. Stereophile has mentioned they do that on purpose!

Wow! I’ve never seen a reference to Hitchhiker’s guide in Stereophile.

Okay. Thanks for that tip. But I still can't find any reference in a Stereophile that says 420 or 42 refers to Hitchhiker's Guide. That sounds like it could be true but I need some evidence. Until then, I'm going with 4:20. At a minimum, hidden ganja references could give Stereophile a little bit of that youthful edginess it lacks.

I looked up John Atkinson yesterday.

He's 70 now.

I wonder who is being groomed to replace him?

Maybe they should just start a new magazine for the younger crowd. I doubt Stereophile will ever transition into the millennial customer base. Could you imagine a $300 DAC review which shows measurements and performance better than $10,000+ DACs in the same magazine? Ain’t gonna happen.
