Hi all,

I am currently using AVR RX-V775 mainly for movies streamed via Apple 4K TV and use its pre-out for my Genelec active monitors 8340 LCR & 8330 in 5.2 set up with 2 SVS 12" subs. Since I am using GLM software in Genelecs, I do not want to use the EQ of Yamaha AVR and hence I have set the "Parametric Eq" to "Through" which means AVR does not use the equaliser. I am normally using the DSP - Surround Sound Program "Standard Theatre" for movies.

Few questions:
  1. On one hand I do not want to use AVR EQ and on the other hand DSP seems to be mandatory to get a good surround effect in the room. Should I continue to use DSP "Standard Theatre" mode or should I use the "Straight option" which will use the dolby decoding of Apple 4K TV?
  2. Attached are some pictures. I am not sure which of these settings will use EQ and which ones not? Any one have any recommendation to not use some of these so as to not mess with the GLM EQ? Especially the ones I am bit skeptical are
    • Sound: Dynamic Range, Adaptive DSP Level
    • Sound Program: Decode Type, DSP Level, Sorround Initial Delay, Surround Room Size, Surround Liveliness
    • Option:Tone Control (Bass), Adaptive DRC, Cinema DSP 3D mode, Dialog Adjust, Volume Trim (Bass)
  3. For movies, sometimes, the dialog level is low. Should I use the Dialog Adjust - dialog level 0-3 option or should I increase the volume gain of Center speaker? Which is better and not Mess with Genelec EQ.
  4. I am using MiniDSP DDRC24 DIRAC for sub correction. Is it recommended to run YPAO again after DIRAC to get the final tuning?
The final objective is to ensure that I use the GLM for EQ and AVR for at the most for its DSP but without meddling with the EQ of GLM.

Many Thanks for the help!

Don't know the answer to all your questions but one thing I am fairly certain of is that you don't want to run YPAO *after* Dirac or GLM as it will alter(i.e. probably degrade) those settings. I'd run it first to let it do what it thinks it should to integrate surrounds, subs etc, *then* apply Dirac and GLM eq to speakers/subs.

For dialogue, another educated guess would be to just increase center channel trim level in AVR as needed.

@Bear123 Thanks a lot! I will follow the center channel trim level. BTW I would also need to share with you my DIRAC corrections for the SVS subwoofer. I am super happy. I also wrote to SVS, shared my measurements. They gave full ok and said there is nothing much to improve.

One question: Are you using DD 5.1 in ATV? I heard it is lossy format. But I tried the Auto format and I found the sound bad and hence I changed it to DD 5.1.

I have "Change Format" set to off, which means "Dolby Atmos" is "On". The description with this setting says:
"Audio will be decoded and sent to your equipment as uncompressed multichannel LPCM. Only change formats if you're experiencing playback problems"

I would run the Yamaha Program and SEE what settings it recommends at least.

You do not have to use the final settings, but if your center is low, it will show if their is a disconnect in volume at least.
