Kind of like a tube trap.

Yeah, I am afraid Wayne unintentionally revealed the real secret behind his flat FR graphs: the dob is key.

Yes, the 16" - it's becoming a bit heavy for my old back these days. I take it out now and then while chasing CCD SNR on the imaging rigs.

Nice: Chasing SINAD vs chasing SNR :)

What do your imaging rigs look like (probably a discussion for another forum)? I’ve been into astronomy and astro photography/imaging even longer than into audio ;)

Same for me.

Couple of equatorial mounts, couple of apos, one fast newtonian, one rare, semi obsolete, Schmidt-like design flat field 520/2.7 plus assorted stuff. Still own (but not using anymore) an original ST4 guider. My skies are awful now that I moved very close to a city in one of the most light-polluted areas of the world, which means I am basically tinkering these days. :(

Absolutely lovely looking system and setup. My cheeky cat, Julio, would find that TosLink cap and steal it, chew it up, or hide it...

Really love that large display on the Okto.

He has some specially tuned bass traps/absorbers in the form of strategically placed bongo drums and miniature Hemholtz resonators. :)
What a beautiful setup. I am lost for words. I have a question. Are your subwoofers connected to the AVR or do you use them stereo music as well?

Thanks for your comment. The subs are used for both HT and music , with the AVR hooked up to the RCA inputs on the subs and the Okto DAC8 Pro feeding the XLR inputs, the AVR handled crossover and room correction when using video sources and the miniDSP SHD Studio does the crossover and room correction for music sources.

Nice setup @waynel how did you connect the miniDSP to the Okto? Did you use XLR, wouldn’t that be analog? Trying to figure out how to incorporate a bass management crossover with hi res streaming into an Okto.

Thanks for your comment. The miniDSP SHD studio is all digital . I use the two AES digital outs into two of the DAC8 pro AES inputs

Thanks for the info! So one AES output on the SHD studio is for the L&R channel and the other AES out is configured for the subs with the crossover frequency set in the SHD studio?
my current sub doesn’t have XLR so I’d have to use a converter cable.

Correct. I use the SHD to mix the sub 80Hz to mono and send that signal to both subs.

waynel,
Congratulations on a well done system from top to bottom.
I keep coming back to this thread and your pics in awe. The selection and arrangement of equipment is outstanding.
Looks very clean cut, articulate and muscular.

This is fidelity porn of the highest order.

Regards,

What a dream system but we all know you are not finished just yet!
First, you gotsa hide those cables
Next, you haf2 stuff pads between the speakers and the walls
Then, you haf2 to somehow cloak that 16:9 abomination in the middle
Upon completion, you will have achieved audio nirvana!
Bon Voyage!

I can do that next time I run Dirac. Here is the response of the main speakers from a few months ago using ARC genesis. As you can see the Salon 2s extended below 20Hz in room.

Why do you need the subs then?

Thought I’d share some photos of my main system In its latest iteration. I appreciate good engineering and have strived to optimize measurable performance hence the SINAD chasing.

Source : Yamaha WXC-50 in player mode with SPDIF out ( I tried Volumio in the SHD but think it’s not ready for prime time)
DSP: MiniDSP SHD studio for sub crossover and room correction below 500Hz
DAC: Okto DAC8 PRO
Amps: Dual Benchmark AHB2‘s in bridged mono
Speakers: Revel Salon 2’s
Subs: dual JL F113v2
cables are all Canare mostly self assembled with Neutrik connectors

For home theater I use a Denon 3700h using an ARX RS-1 for HT bypass

Amazing setup! Do you have REW and a Umik-1 so we could see an FIR graph?

Better, louder, flatter bass.
I can’t comment on better as it’s subjective but Salon2 has more piston area at sub frequencies than your subs. The chart you posted earlier was showing a pretty flat bass. Hence, other than the “better” comment I still don’t understand why you felt the need for subs.

I own a pair of Salon2 and their inbuilt sub always sounded to me much better than any external sub I tried over the years.

I agree, I own a pair of Salon2 as well and after running room correction with miniDSP, I get quite satisfying bass that extends to ~18Hz. I have never felt the need to run subwoofers but I don’t exceed 95db, and am using 500W @6ohms per channel of amplification. While the sub headroom may be useful at higher SPL, I don’t see a need to add them for the levels I listen at.

As I said above, each Salon2 has an equivalent cone area of a 14" woofer, as large as many subs, and naturally there are two of them, hence you have two 14" subs in the room. 2x 14" drivers will give you 100dBSPL at 20Hz before adding any room gain. I don't think they are limited at sub frequencies at all.
