For those interested in Sci-Fi book series I highly recommend Lois McMaster-Bujold’s Vorkosigan Saga. I’d love to see it made into a limited series.

Then there is the greatest of all time, Isaac Asimov’s Foundation Series. Looks like AppleTV is taking it on. (I may need to subscribe to yet another streaming service.)

Martin

Been a while since I read Foundation- IIRC the first couple of books were good- after that it just became people zipping around space like some kind of bad Da Vinci Code sci fi

Anyone else notice how the bulk of the lyrics to Eclipse fit Paul as the Kwisatz Haderach.?This was one of my main complaints with Lynch's version. That it didn't convey what Paul was becoming, other than he had some kind of supernormal power

All that you touch
And all that you see
All that you taste
All you feel
And all that you love
And all that you hate
All you distrust
All you save
And all that you give
And all that you deal
And all that you buy
Beg, borrow or steal
And all you create
And all you destroy
And all that you do
And all that you say
And all that you eat
And everyone you meet (everyone you meet)
And all that you slight
And everyone you fight
And all that is now
And all that is gone
And all that's to come

Yes, that was one of the story bits of story change I didnt like - didnt elaborate what the KH was or why the Guild and Sisterhood needed him not to be .

That , and the addition of the voice weapons as a proxy for part of his talents

And that was so important to understanding Paul's "becoming," for lack of a better word. And was so important to understanding his struggle as a character and the choices he had to make.

Dune is not about Dune, which is something that Lynch didn't seem to get. It's about Paul. This is also how it differs so greatly from GoT, which really was focused on many different characters. If that's what people are hoping for, look to Amazon's Wheel of Time production for that (which I am also looking forward to).

So I have high hopes for Villeneuve's version, given the choice of that theme song and the focus he puts on characters, such as with Arrival and Sicario.

I want Paul's story. I don't want a sci-fi, special effects extravaganza about Dune. I don't want another Ender's Game movie that doesn't achieve character focus.

I suspect lynch got it. I also suspect he either realised he couldn't make or wasn't allowed to make that story

. In all honesty, Dune as a standalone story doesn't make sense from a narrative perspective until the universe expands in the sequels, and you can't expect the audience to come armed with knowledge or cram all the mythology into a 2 hour or less single film. That includes worms and battles.

I think you're right, the level and amount of introspection found in Dune can't really translate well from book to movie.

Yes, worth a read. I haven't read it since I was a teenager in the 1980s, but back then I really enjoyed it along with Dune and the LOTR trilogy. It was so different than any other series I had read as it really did create a hard to like main character.

Bought book 1 on kindle earlier . We shall see !

Another series of books I'd like to see a mini-series/movie for would be Zelazny's Amber Chronicles. Looking forward to the new Dune, have liked Villeneuve's work so far. Dang Netflix doesn't have the Dune mini-series, haven't seen that....

Just started to reread the series the other day.

Speaking of Zelazny, I've only read Lord of Light and Creatures of Light and Darkness which I enjoyed.

The Sci-fi classic I'd most like to see made into a movies, (probably movies), it Gene Wolfe's tetralogy, Book of the New Sun. For me simply the best book of the genre I have ever read. ... Mind you, it would be all to easy to make that into an overblown fuck-up as Peter Jackson did the LoTR, and that's not even to mention The Hobbit.

I like that Paul is appropriately younger, a teen, as he was in the books, as opposed to being portrayed as a mid 20-something.

I guess Jason Mamoa is Duncan Idaho?

Who is playing Gurney Halleck?

I enjoyed those Zelazny books, too but can't think of anything of his that I haven't liked. I'll have to check out the Wolfe out, not run into that before.

Larry Niven's Ringworld set would be another good one......
