I've gotten pretty familiar with the Pinto case through the years. The Pinto actually had a decent safety record compared to other subcompact cars of its time. Their tendency to catch fire has been overstated through the years.

This study from the Rutgers Law Review does a good job of going through the case and the data, although it is not brief: http://www.perishablepundit.com/docs/The_Myth_of_the_Ford_Pinto_Case.pdf

One excerpt: in 1975-1976, Pintos represented about 1.9% of the vehicles on US roads and were involved in about 1.9% of collisions involving fire.

I know I'm not going to change any perceptions.

Stop me if you've heard this one.

A mechanical engineer, a chemical engineer, and a computer engineer are driving through the desert when their car starts making horrible choppy noises before stalling out.

The mechanical engineer mutters "its that darn intake manifold again" and pops the hood.

The chemical engineer muses "I wonder if this desert heat is causing some vapor lock in the fuel pump" and goes out under the rear quarter panel to have a look.

The computer engineer says nothing, but quietly gets out of the car, and shuts the driver side door. Then he re-opens the door, and slides into the driver seat.

The car starts right up.

It's against the hockey "code" for hockey players to fake injuries (would get called out by your own teammates)
