Venezuela has been a bad place to go for about 5 years now, but a really bad place to go for about 1 year.

I had an online acquaintance who lived in Maracaibo in an apartment tower on the lake.

As things deteriorated they moved to their vacation home in the mountains in Merida.

He wanted to get out but his VZ wife wouldn't consider it due to family ties.

Then, somehow injured his back rather severely in the back of a pickup truck.

As things deteriorated more he bought a Columbian Passport (he was from Alaska, was a bush pilot, worked oil rigs around Africa, ended up in VZ importing car parts and trading Forex, the gains stored in dollars in US banks)

The last I heard he was in Colombia without the wife waiting in line for back surgery.

Post deleted. Folks, this is a very serious worldwide health issue. Information about it is useful and appreciated. Everything else that may result in it not being so, not. If your post is not about the disease, don't hit post.

A further 70 people on the Diamond Princess cruise ship quarantined in Japan have tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the total to 355 (out of 3,770 passengers and crew).

Coronavirus: 70 more cases on Japan cruise ship as China infections pass 68,000

454 people on Diamond Princess cruise ship test positive

12% infection spread in less than a month.

Out of a total of 1,723 passengers and crew members tested on board the quarantined Diamond Princess cruise ship off the coast of Japan, 454 people were confirmed to have been infected, Japan’s health ministry said. That included 189 asymptomatic carriers, or those who tested positive but did not show any symptoms, according to the ministry.
...
The ship had been quarantined since Feb. 3 after a previous guest tested positive for the disease six days after disembarking (on January 20th).

Just read that the Mobile World Congress (MWC) show is cancelled! This is the largest wireless conference in the world. It is the CES of the mobile world. A number of companies pulled out exhibiting leading to them cancelling the show at the last minute.

The business impact is getting very significant.

Plenty of others too. Quite a number of manufacturing / equipment related exhibitions in South East Asia have either been indefinitely postponed or cancelled outright due to the concerns as well as the complete absence of China based companies.

Caitlin Rivers (twitter), who works for US Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, has publicly posted China's CDC report on the first ~72,000 infected cases.

Link to research paper was posted on Github, 13 hours ago.
Paper was published officially on Feb 14.
It analyzed all cases up until Feb 11.

A total of 72,314 unique records were analyzed and of those 44,672 (61%) were confirmed.
Here's a breakdown of the n=44,672 confirmed cases.
1582004773063.png

This shows:
1. Anyone over the age of 60 is significantly more at risk of death. Approx. 80% of confirmed deaths were for those over 60.
2. About 2/3 of deaths are in men. 1/3 in women.

1582005060486.png

This shows:
1. There were 104 "confirmed cases" before Dec 31, 2019.
2. There were 15 deaths before Dec 31, 2019.

The conclusion was:
We need to prepare for a possible rebound of the COVID-19 epidemic in the coming weeks and months.

Haven't seen anyone do this before. Gives a whole new meaning to the term "money laundering".

China is sterilizing cash in an attempt to stop the coronavirus spreading

Chinese banks have been ordered to disinfect cash before issuing it to the public in an effort to curb the spread of the new coronavirus that has so far killed 1,770 people in the country.

The Chinese government said during a press conference on Saturday that banks would only be permitted to release new bills which had been sterilized.

Banks across the country had been told to withdraw potentially infected cash from circulation and disinfect it using either ultraviolet or heat treatments, the government’s State Council told reporters. Decontaminated cash would then be stored for seven to 14 days before it could be returned to the market.

That sounds mainly like a way for China to reduce cash usage and gain more control through electronic payments. In dense areas, even the beggars take WeChat.

No drop-down oxygen masks on that flight.

Named for Johns Hopkins. Not "John". OK?

Alma mater of:

As an undergrad, I see your point and I've updated my posts.

For any Russians:
"From 00:00 local time on February 20, 2020, the passage of citizens from the People’s Republic of China across the state border of the Russian Federation is temporarily suspended," the statement said. (Source)

That would be so meta...

Don't know new-speak, so, don't know what you mean...

Passenger oxygen would normally be a requirement, so, I'm curious about the apparent possible exception for this flight:

"(2) When an airplane is operated at flight altitudes up to and including flight level 250 and cannot descend safely to a flight altitude of 14,000 feet within four minutes, or when an airplane is operated at flight altitudes above flight level 250, oxygen must be available at the rate prescribed by this part for not less than 10 percent of the passenger cabin occupants for the entire flight after cabin depressurization, at cabin pressure altitudes above 10,000 feet up to and including 14,000 feet and, as applicable, to allow compliance with § 121.329(c) (2) and (3), except that there must be not less than a 10-minute supply for the passenger cabin occupants."

I would think a 747 should be able to safely drop 26,000 feet in four minutes (40,000 assumed maximum altitude to 14,000 at 6500 fpm) if they chop the throttles and pop the spoilers, so, maybe they are marginally compliant.

It happens...

US CDC issued this release about the situation on the Diamond Princess (in Japan):
We commend the extraordinary efforts by the Government of Japan to institute quarantine measures onboard the Diamond Princess. While the quarantine potentially conferred a significant public health benefit in slowing transmission, CDC’s assessment is that it may not have been sufficient to prevent transmission among individuals on the ship. CDC believes the rate of new infections on board, especially among those without symptoms, represents an ongoing risk. Therefore, to protect the health of the American public, all passengers and crew of the ship have been placed under travel restrictions, preventing them from returning to the United States for at least 14 days after they had left the Diamond Princess.

Currently, there are more than 100 U.S. citizens still onboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship or in hospitals in Japan. These citizens have been placed under the restrictions, as have the ship’s other passengers and crew.

After disembarkation from the Diamond Princess, these passengers and crew will be required to wait 14 days without having symptoms or a positive coronavirus test result before they are permitted to board flights to the United States.

If an individual from this cruise arrives in the United States before the 14-day period ends, they will still be subject to a mandatory quarantine until they have completed the 14-day period with no symptoms or positive coronavirus test results.

Because of their high-risk exposure, there may be additional confirmed cases of COVID-19 among the remaining passengers on board the Diamond Princess.

CDC is committed to protecting the health and safety of all Americans. We continue to believe that the risk of exposure to COVID-19 to the general public in the United States is currently low. The U.S. Government is taking these measures to protect the Diamond Princess passengers and crew, their loved ones, the traveling public, and communities within the United States.
