Me and Mrs. were at an uplifting concert yesterday. The oldest male choir in Finland is saluting 120 years! Jyväskylä Symphony was conducted by Okko Kamu, program was mostly Sibelius, from era just before Finland declared independency in 1917. Our Independence day is tomorrow December 6th.

iTunes: (2018) BACH C.P.E. - Cello Concertos — J.-G. QUEYRAS; R. MINASI; ENS. RESONANZ
Spotify: (2018) BACH C.P.E. - Cello Concertos — J.-G. QUEYRAS; R. MINASI; ENS. RESONANZ
Tidal: (2018) BACH C.P.E. - Cello Concertos — J.-G. QUEYRAS; R. MINASI; ENS. RESONANZ

Listened to this album probably a dozen times already. The performances are all excellent.

I couldn't find a full youtube video so here's just a preview (I also don't use youtube music so didn't bother to look it up there):

*I think I spotted a Neumann KH120 monitor (same ones I used to listen to the music) somewhere in the background on the video! LOL :D

Thanks for the CPE Bach cello concerto recommendation. I'm a big fan of Queyras and somehow overlooked that release.

My favorite recording of the Cello Concertos is still Mørk. I have to admit that recently I've gotten a bit jaded by the glut of recordings of these concertos, including the versions for flute and oboe.

Quite a respectable selection of music. You folks (men mostly I suppose--I once saw one woman in attendance at a meeting of the Minnesota Audio Society)--can not just tackle for also appreciate the more difficult material. A couple months ago I compared Beethoven piano sonata performances by Igor Levit and Andras Schiff. Gilels has been my long term favorite with this material. I expected Levit to be an impetuous youngster who overplayed. As it turned out I prefer Levit's playing. I remember listening to the MN Orch recordings of the Beethoven symph.s. Nice recordings but so controlled. It was like they were playing Beethoven after they've learned to master Sibelius, R. Strauss, and Mahler. They performed Beethoven as if it were twentieth century music. However, it was written at the time of Napoleon. It needs a little Napoleon to come alive. It isn't Vaughan Williams. Otherwise, let me recommend Alicia de Larrocha playing Albeniz Iberia movements one through nine. The first movement is worth the price of admission. Truly. At a concert once I saw her perform and it was rare for me but I was seated up front. I enjoyed noting the shoes she wore. Lastly, anyone out there ventured into the Ligeti piano etudes? They will stymie and defeat the analytical mind. Enough for now...too much probably.

My son played in one of the country's most well-regarded high school wind band programs, so I became familiar with some of the modern composers who write music either directly for wind band or that is often transcribed for wind band. I only recently discovered this album on Tidal of music by Michael Torke. Here's a link to it on YouTube.

Listening this morning to LSO Schumann symphonies 1 & 3 conducted by Eliot Gardiner. Just came out yesterday. Listening lossless on Qobuz, but you can buy it from the record label in whatever nutty audiophile format you desire (excluding QMA). There’s also a hybrid multi-channel SACD, which strikes me as a genuinely interesting proposition for those of you with multi-channel systems. Here’s the music release page:

I won’t waste your time with poetry and prose. I will say that for me it’s joyous and incredibly rich and accessible music, intended by the composer to be that way, and the performances and recording both strike me as being absolutely phenomenal.

Another recent Schumann recording I was impressed with was Herreweghe conducting 2 & 4:

Does anybody else enjoy the recordings of classical transcriptions and modern compositions for wind ensemble done by "The President's Own" US Marine Band?

Many larger libraries get the CDs that are distributed by the band at no cost for educational purposes. The performances are always good, and the sonics are generally excellent.

I heard Trump was replacing them with a lounge act. Plays all the casinos. Very classy.

I bought their Berlioz Symphonie funebre et triomphale on CD, but that's the only recording of theirs that I have. I should give it a listen soon.

Delightful. I might venture to say that Gardiner is my favorite conductor.
