Why is the power rating so low though?

They don't need to be selling amplifiers that can't hit their rated specifications, overheat and pematurely fail do they? They are fan-less, sealed boxes by the look- they need to be conservative and use lower powered modules- this stuff will likely be stacked and buried under a pile of junk on people's desks and get rather warm.

Very cute little retro designs. :)

...THD of 0.8% makes me question things too...

0.8% will be at maximum power. It is more respectable at powers within the linear region.

The frequency response is putrid and not remotely HiFi at all.

Love the looks!

Why is the power rating so low though?
  • Rated Output Power:
    115W+115W (4 ohms, 1kHz, THD 0.8%)
    70W+70W (8 ohms, 1kHz, THD 0.8%)
  • BTL Output Power:
    250W (4 ohms, Monaural)
    200W (8 ohms, Monaural)

  • Power Consumption:
    55 W

Hmm.....

Yes, it's magic (smoke and mirrors)...

The problem is the different requirements for power consumption ratings in different countries. Also, the EU wants smaller consumption numbers on everything. (see EU regs on vac cleaners) Gone are the honest ratings we used to have, across the board. We should be seeing VA with PF / Watts at rated power outputs. Then the truth would come out. Personally, I'm sick of all the bullshit power output ratings these days- I wish the FTC would raise their hands and fine many of these scamming companies.

I have a vintage Yamaha that measures .003% - 260 watts for 8 ohm load

As stated, it all depends on at what point of the power/THD curve you specify the THD.

Looks like an NC122MP in a Teac box.

Betting the 55W is idle though.

For those who thought they were going to get a cheap Hypex nCore based amp, it's 1350 GBP, Euro 1450, USD 1500, CAD $2200....

In Australia, they should probably slap an Esoteric badge on it. Here the TEAC brand's reputation is as good (or bad) as KMart- a big box store aimed at shifting the lowest priced products possible.

When moving house the removalists dropped my expensive but troublesome, early adopter, Sony Betamax recorder. The heavily depreciated insurance payout got me a cheap, plasticy, Teac VHS recorder. This machine went on for years and the main users were my young kids.

Yes, Down Under, TEAC were down-market. Good value, though.

Unobtrusive, unspectacular, which is good in my book :)
no reason to complain so far
Temperature on the top slightly lower compared to NT-505

Nice, looking for something that stays cool too.

Seriously considering taking a punt and ordering one, I'm limited with options in Japan.
