Hi all ...
first post hope its the right forum...
I am currently replacing my 35 year old Yamaha NS20M monitors powered by a Perroux 100w amp
which have served me well...
.But a midrange driver failing
and subsequently replaced by the only driver in the world that i could
find has now given me monitors with
2 different interpretations of whats happening
in the mid range..so time to replace.
I have auditioned the Neumann kh120...Genelec 8030cp and the Dynaudio LYD48 (and others kali presonus yamaha dont have a big range down here).
Here in australia we do not have a store that will let you take them home and return if not suitable.
so after lots of listening I chose the LYDs..
i know they are 3 way compared to 2 way but the bottom end of the other 2 sounded woofy thats the best way to describe it.
on the other hand the LKYDs sound clear with good sound stage
but i felt myself wanting some more bottom end.

Sorry this is so long
So i am wondering if the LYD48 Owners can tell me what they think of the bottom delivered by their monitors.
my room is 4.5 x 3.5 mts.. I am seated approx 1.2 mtr from apex
with good Acoustic Treatment.
The thing is ive put a deposit on them
but Covid /Omicron has stretched out the delivery time by 6 weeks
and the store has given me the option of pulling out of the deal.
but if i do what will i buy??
i really want to like the LYDS ($3100 au) but but i heard the Neumann KH310 ($5400 au) and they had it all as well as price tag.
PS I dont want to use a sub.

PPS is that really an 8" driver looks more like 6.5/7" to me
Thanks for reading

I've had LYD 48s for several years and find them quite good for my purposes. I listen to the LYD 48s at a distance of about 9 feet with max sound level no more than 85 dB.

Sound quality for bass depends on the room as well as the speakers. Spening ~ $ 100 (USD) for a calibrated measurement microphone and using REW to measure response in your room is the best investment you can make. If you haven't already measured response in your room, consider doing it.

There are several switches on the back of the LYD 48 that are relevant. One switch controls the extend of low frequency response.(+10 Hz, 0, -10 Hz). Another is for near wall placement. A third is for light or dark sounding rooms. Read up in the LYD 48 user guide and try them out.

Thanks for the reply....
yes i am aware of all the switches and used them all in my
listening tests at the showroom...
still seemed a little shy in the bottom.
i dont want the "bottom end" of the neuman kh120 or the genelecs
as i feel it clouds the upper bass/lower mids
but would love the bottom end of the Neuman 310
my room is adequately treated and yes i do have a calibration mike
and have measured the room with REW.
i probably listen at lower level 70/75db as it i have Tinnitus from many years
as a live player.
on another note why do they say it is an 8 " woofer
because if you run a ruler across them its not 8" is it?
anyway keen to hear more of your thoughts
thanks

I have a very similar setup to yours using lyd 48’s (and 18s sub) in a well treated room of comparable size (4.3m x 3.3m) and the LYD’s are fine when seated at the desk with more than enough bass response for my liking of techno/electronic music at near field listening but when sat in my general 3/4 room seating position I wanted a visceral full body experience that only a sub could give (previously had krk G4 Rokit 7’s and krk 10s sub) so I bought the matching Dynaudio 18s sub and it makes a very noticeable difference at all db listening levels, if I was sat at the desk all day I’d be perfectly happy with the LYD’s on their own but for a midfield setup i consider the sub to be necessary, can I ask why do you not wish to use a sub?, using both LYD’s/subwould be less than a pair of Neumann KH310 and outperform them in every way.

From what I read about the KH310’s they are very accurate and have slightly more power with similar low end response but I’ve read on gearspace that they can sound somewhat flat and uninspiring, that’s obviously a subjective opinion and I’ve not heard them so……..?

Here’s a good thread on gearspace regarding the LYD 48’s

My preference would likely be for the lyd 48 on the basis that they do not utilize a waveguide. That's going to be the biggest difference. I prefer the very strong center and expansive imaging of the lyd tweeter. I did not care for the kh120 or 8030c waveguided tweeter or their woofers. Too small.

Just another thought but there’s the Dynaudio Core 47’s and perhaps the Hedd Type 20’s to consider as they are around the KH310 price range.

Dynaudio Core 47’s

Hedd Type 20mk2

It was hearing the Hedd type 20mk2 in my room courtesy of a mate dropping by with them that got got me thinking about a 3 way monitor to replace my krk setup, with thought to financial sensibly I couldn’t afford the Hedds which is where my interest in the Dynaudio‘s started and I’m very chuffed with my choice.

edit : another choice at less than half the LYD’s cost would be the KRK 10 3 way G4 Rokit’s as they go down to 26hz and have inbuilt 25 band dsp to tailor the sound to your room, the KRK app is quite good but as you have a measurement mic it’s not necessary to use.

KRK 10 3 way G4 Rokit’s

Thanks for the replies...
using a sub has never been part of my setup and i am afraid that i will
spend a lot of time second guessing myself...
i dont know i would just prefer not to use one.
All of my listing/mixing will be done from 1.2 mtr
and rarely turn up past 80db (tinnitus).
i really cant consider the 310 or anything in their price range
because of price..(also not readily available in AUS)
cant go over the $3100 im spending now.
I agree 5" woofer are working at their max ( to my ears)
at all times trying to compensate for their size
making the bottom end forced/woofy.
much prefer 8"..but on that..
can you confirm the actual diameter of your
LYD woofer i measyured it in store
and it wasnt 8"..whats the story there
thanks

There you go, 7” actual driver diameter or 8” including mounting hardware, pretty reasonable as my KRK Rokit 7”s had a 6.2” actual driver. Quite common for manufactures to measure outer edge when stating driver size. If it’s any consolation the low end on the 48’s without sub is very defined and anything but forced/bloaty /woozy at all times and certainly at levels less than <90db which is bloody LOUD in my room, I mainly listen around the 75 - 80db level.

Thanks for that...
yeah thats what i thought actual driver smaller
than 8".
Something must have changed in the intervening 30 years
coz my NS20m measure 8" actual driver as stated in the specs.
Anyway it is what it is..
im feeling a little more reassured now thanks to all of the replies
i think ill take my chances and get them.
PS what model isoacoustic stand are you using??

Ib my opinion the next step up from here of the available monitors
in Aus...is the KH310...but $3100 vs $5400 so ...big step.
nothing 3 way in between...also KH310 larger in dimensions
and heavier

Plenty wide enough and the monitors are not going anywhere, the 200's are slightly to deep for the lyds in my opinion

In my opinion, subwoofers are needed for full bandwidth playback, and I very much like the tight integration of LYD 48s with SUB 18s thanks to DSP.
Worth noting that it's possible to increase the output by 5 dBs decreasing the low-frequency extension by 10 Hz, which is fine as the bass will be assigned to the subs.
4th order, 80Hz Linkwitz-Riley high-pass filter... also, it's possible to time-align the subs with the mains.
Two LYD 48s and two SUB 18s are a competitively priced combo (costs are significantly lower than mentioned in this video:

Your thoughts?

I will not be using a sub...
i do mainly acoustic instruments.. country/Americana type music
and never monitor loud.
So if i can get enough bottom end for that
i will be happy.
And ok will get the isoacoustic 155
Now all i have to do is wait...
first it was mid jan delivery then late jan
now end feb...at least numbers are
dropping ..definately over the worst.
so good times till the next variant.
PS..On a completely different note (Ha!)
are you guys using a monitor controller.
I have an RME ufx interface and a
Nano patch controller
but i want to upgrade ......nothing too fancy
just 2 monitors /mute/mono/dim etc
passive pref or active....ideas??

My LYD’s took 4 months to arrive from ordering to receiving them, worth the wait and with your choice of music the bottom end will be fine, I can’t imagine there’s much under 60hz to worry abou.
