After reading Prokofiev’s diary for his 1927 trip to the USSR I’ve been on a bit of a run through his works, including the Quintet from the CD above, but what really tingled my molecules was Martha Argerich playing Liszt’s Concerto Pathetique. As a result I got one of the last tickets to see her playing at the Barbican next week!

Martha Argerich is a force of nature. I am jealous.

Two new recordings which have delighted me lately:

Martin Helmchen playing Beethoven's Diabelli Variations

... and Adam Fischer conducting Mahler's No. 1

If you have Tidal or Spotify give them a listen. The first is marvelously witty, while the second...as lyrical as Mahler symphonies come by. Great sound too.

My favourite is Schubert's 9th symphony, I have several recordings but tend to prefer the Abbado COE and a recording by Bohm in Dresden.

Other favourites include the Beethoven symphonies (a cliché I know, but there's a good reason they're so popular), Holt's Planets, Elgar's Enigma Variations, Prokofiev's 5th symphony and Lt. Kije suite, Mahler's 5th symphony and the Brahms symphonies.

For opera I tend to listen to a lot of Rossini, Verdi and Mozart but also enjoy more modern opera. I love Berg's Lulu (I have the Boulez recording) and Adams' Nixon in China.

I've been working through the wonderful Sony box set of all George Szell's recordings with the Cleveland Orchestra. This must have been a labour of love for somebody at Sony, beautifully presented and not a single recording is less than good. And at the frequent best the performances remain wonderful, played to a remarkably high standard and well recorded. For what it is the set is a bargain, anybody who hasn't seen it should check it out.
