    Ancient Loudspeakers

Wrong is wrong. If nothing else, as @Curvature strongly implies, here's an excellent chance to set these records straight, as he has done, piecemeal. and -- this very thread is very cite-able. It is worse than rude to reproduce someone else's published scholarship (be it accurate or flawed...

Did manufacturers give up on AVRs?

Which From my perspective - which, admittedly, might be faulty ;) - Atmos ups the ante considerably in terms of complexity compared to "first generation quad" or even Dolby ProLogic. "Quad" suffered from the confusion of too many, poorly understood/differentiated standards (plus ça change...

Yamaha CR-1020 Vintage Receiver Measurements and Features

Nope, just a collector :) Long story short: When I caught the "stereo bug" (ca. 1976) I was very short on funds, so I window-shopped a lot. Listened to many different things (many, though not all, dealers were surprisingly tolerant in those days of scruffy but earnest college students). I...

Yamaha CR-1020 Vintage Receiver Measurements and Features

The CR-1020 and its siblings are also -- realizing full-well that this is subjective and untestable -- beautiful. It is hard to believe that the same aesthetic Zeitgeist that produced the leisure suit also spawned this era of Yamaha audio components. ;)

Yamaha CR-1020 Vintage Receiver Measurements and Features

Neat-o! Thank you for sharing this information. FWIW, I've always enjoyed the sound of that era of Yamaha equipment. It's never struck me as lean or clinical sounding. These components paired exceptionally well with popular (and popularly priced!) loudspeakers of their day, too -- e.g., the...

Cupping hands behind ears while listening - WOW!

Musing is a perfectly respectable pastime -- although, for best results, musing should always include a disclaimer. Full Disclosure: I am musing here.

    A Call For Humor!

This forum really needs an Awesome button that we can click! Like this... sample - screenshot from the Polk forums. :) EDIT: So, I do have a question about the skillfully constructed prototype in the above-referenced post. Does it also include an onboard Class D power amp? I cannot tell...

    PreSonus Sceptre S6 Monitor Review

I used Duplexes (with Mastering Labs XOs) here for years; only switched to the current Frankenaltec configuration due to the limited dispersion ('sweet spot') of the 604E's quasi-multicell :) horns. I love the Duplexes. 604E by Mark Hardy, on Flickr Besides the 604E, there's a pair of 604B...

Do Ported Speakers Sound Bad (AP Mastering Video)

LF extension and roll-off (i.e., rate of SPL decrease as a function of frequency) is a little more complicated (maybe even nuanced) than "sealed vs. ported". If nothing else, there's always the ultimate "sealed" enclosure vis-a-vis dealing with the back wave. -- the infinite baffle. :) In the...

    PreSonus Sceptre S6 Monitor Review

yeppers. Reading @amirm's comment about the horn - uhh - waveguide covering much of the woofer cone's real estate, I thought, well, that's nothing new! ;) e.g., https://www.parts-express.com/B-C-6HCX51-6.5-Neodymium-Coaxial-Speaker-70-x-70-8-Ohm-294-5762 image from...

Did manufacturers give up on AVRs?

Oh, I should point out that even Kubrick later went two channel... The YT video link (spoiler tag below) is provided strictly as a reference for the screenshot above! It is strictly NSFW. You have been warned.

Did manufacturers give up on AVRs?

Nothing at all wrong with really good monophonic (monaural).

Did manufacturers give up on AVRs?

True but... four Cornwalls ("Cornwall 1", more to the point). The problem isn't four -- it's Cornwalls. Trust me. I did my time with two Cornwall 1s. It's unhinged. ;) EDIT: Another empirical datapoint. Not a professional. Not multichannel. Not unhinged. :)

Did manufacturers give up on AVRs?

Far earlier than DVD. Since 1971, give or take. Even if one discounts quad, Dolby ProLogic (not really that different than matrix quad) was all the rage in some circles by the late 1980s. Heck, even my father had a ProLogic receiver!

Did manufacturers give up on AVRs?

Really? Wendy (Walter) Carlos at one point had four (early version) Klipsch Cornwalls in the corners, flying, in their home/studio in NYC -- that is unhinged. https://community.klipsch.com/topic/54304-wall-mounted-cornwalls-dont-cut-it/ oh the cacophony

    A Call For Humor!

So... we do need to take up a collection and get @amirm an LC-MS. cool. EDIT: I mean... he should have one any way. I still have some connections; I might be able to scare up an older but still serviceable surplus instrument from some old friends. ;) (perhaps surprisingly, I have neither an...

Do Ported Speakers Sound Bad (AP Mastering Video)

Do ported loudspeakers sound bad a priori? no. Have there been, in century (give or take) of history for ported loudspeakers (Helmholtz resonators), bad sounding ones? yes.

Scoville units... We may need to chip in and get him an LC-MS or a GC-MS or something for the quantitative work :)
